Recovering from stomach flu, still have gas and diarrhea. Will pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) help or make things worse?

Diarrhea: I doubt pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) will hurt, but it will make your stool black so don't panic. I would suggest a brat diet (banana, rice, apple sauce, tea, toast) and avoid dairy for the next 2 weeks. ...Read more

Gastroenterologist: Viral infections of the GI tract usually clear after a week but can leave behind an irritable bowel syndrome for a week or more. If you're having ongoing severe diarrhea with cramps, see your physician for evaluation and have your stool cultured to check for other types of infection. In the meantime follow a bland, low roughage diet with peptobismol as needed and this may make your stools black. ...Read more

Throwing up and can't keep down liquids, how to be able to keep liquids down? Been 2 1/2 days tried thera flu, pepto bismol, (bismuth subsalicylate) tea, water. A piece of fruit.

Hello.: Hello. You may want to start with sips of room temperature water. Flat gingerale can help sometimes. You can also make some ginger tea. Put slices of organic ginger in a tea pot and allow to steep in boiling water for at least five minutes. Start with sips. Avoid acidic juices (tomato, orange, grapefruit), coffee, tea or dark sodas. If you find that despite attempts to hydrate yourself that you have a rapid resting heart rate (ie. 120), or that you feel faint or dizzy when going from lying to sitting or sitting to standing, then you may be dehydrated. If this is the case, you can consider going to an acute care clinic or an er, as you might need intravenous hydration. Hope you feel better soon. ...Read more

Hi! I have recently been vomitting up stomach vile (maybe for the past week) and it's not stopping. Can I take pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) for it?

Yes, but...: If you've been vomiting for a solid week, I would see your doctor as soon as you can regardless. These at worst can be signs of a serious infection or an intestinal blockage. Pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) will be unlikely to help this, though it can be taken. ...Read more

I just had 30 ml of pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) for an upset stomach. I realized that it expired almost 4 years ago. Is this something to worry about?

I'm having bad stomach pains after taking to many ibuprofens and I took pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) but it doesn't seem to work. How long should it take to work?

It may not: Pepto may not be strong enough to counteract damage done by the nsaid. I am currently stuck on shift in an icu and am having an acute stress gastritis attack, will pepto bismol help with the stomach pain?

Gastritis: I am so sorry to hear this! Pepto should help, but you should see an MD to see why this is happening especially if this in to the first time: you may need to be checked for H pylori. Also, be sure you are not eating sugary foods, soda, refined carbs; go gluten free for a few months to see if this helps. Avoid caffeine (if you can) as this will make the irritation worse. My child has a stomach ache with his chickenpox, can I give them pepto-bismol?

Not recommended: Pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) has a component salycelate that was linled with a devistating disease called reye's syndrome in the 70's & 80's. After physicians stopped recomending salycelate products there was a rapid decline in the frequency of that problem. Which product: We rarely use any product with salicylates in kids under 16 due to a connection to liver failure & death called Reye syndrome. Depends: You should not use the adult pepto. It contains salycelates which are linked to Reye Syndrome in kids, a devastating cause of liver failure and death. There is a Kids pepto, without salycelates. I encourage parents to avoid giving anything other than fluids and a bland diet. ...Read more

Hello Doctor. How are you? I have a few pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) tablets that expired one year ago. I have a really bad stomach ache. Is it safe to take a pill?

Would use new: Generally good policy not to take expired medications, and I would get fresh antacids, or even try household baking soda if you feel this is from stomach acid. If recurrent, see MD. Ulcers (? aspirin/motrin), infection (e.g. H pylori), gall stones, etc may need to be considered. Seek MD esp if red flags eg increasing nausea/vomit, blood/melena (black stools), anemia, weight loss, fever ...Read more
