28 year old healthy female. I had a stomach bug 8 days ago. I am still having stomach cramps, pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) helps but pain comes back. Any suggestions?
Gastroenterologist: Viral infections of the GI tract usually clear after a week but can leave behind an irritable bowel syndrome for a week or more. If you're having ongoing severe diarrhea with cramps, see your physician for evaluation and have your stool cultured to check for other types of infection. In the meantime follow a bland, low roughage diet with peptobismol as needed and this may make your stools black. ...Read more
My spouse has a stomach virus. Can he take Pepto Bismol if he takes Zoloft (sertraline) and Norco? Thank you!
Throwing up and can't keep down liquids, how to be able to keep liquids down? Been 2 1/2 days tried thera flu, pepto bismol, (bismuth subsalicylate) tea, water. A piece of fruit.
Hello.: Hello. You may want to start with sips of room temperature water. Flat gingerale can help sometimes. You can also make some ginger tea. Put slices of organic ginger in a tea pot and allow to steep in boiling water for at least five minutes. Start with sips. Avoid acidic juices (tomato, orange, grapefruit), coffee, tea or dark sodas. If you find that despite attempts to hydrate yourself that you have a rapid resting heart rate (ie. 120), or that you feel faint or dizzy when going from lying to sitting or sitting to standing, then you may be dehydrated. If this is the case, you can consider going to an acute care clinic or an er, as you might need intravenous hydration. Hope you feel better soon. ...Read more

I came back from El Salvador past Monday and I can't eat much without it upset my stomach and me using the bathroom. Been taking Pepto-Bismol?
See doctor: It sounds like you may have a case of traveller's diarrhea. It usually arises from unsanitary handling of food, and lasts 3-7 days. Pepto-Bismol and oral rehydration are mainstays of initial home treatment, but a physician will also evaluate whether you would be a candidate for an anti-diarrheal like lomotil, (diphenoxylat and atropine) and whether you need antibiotics. ...Read more

I just had 30 ml of pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) for an upset stomach. I realized that it expired almost 4 years ago. Is this something to worry about?
No: There is a 36 month expiration placed on all consumable products such as medications even though most are stable far longer as long as they're not exposed to hot temperatures. You will have no harm from using the pepto-bismol, but should get some fresh product when you can. ...Read more
I'm having bad stomach pains after taking to many ibuprofens and I took pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) but it doesn't seem to work. How long should it take to work?
It may not: Pepto may not be strong enough to counteract damage done by the nsaid. If the pain has worsened suddenly, consider visiting the ED for an evaluation as there is always risk of perforation or other emergent outcome. Also, better medications can be offered to promote healing of the stomach lining and for the pain you were initially treating. ...Read more

I am currently stuck on shift in an icu and am having an acute stress gastritis attack, will pepto bismol help with the stomach pain?
Gastritis: I am so sorry to hear this! Pepto should help, but you should see an MD to see why this is happening especially if this in to the first time: you may need to be checked for H pylori. Also, be sure you are not eating sugary foods, soda, refined carbs; go gluten free for a few months to see if this helps. Avoid caffeine (if you can) as this will make the irritation worse. My wife is having continuous stomach cramps for about 4 hrs. She has used pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) without success. She has not vomited. She is not nauseous.
Not recommended: Pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) has a component salycelate that was linled with a devistating disease called reye's syndrome in the 70's & 80's. Discuss your concern with your physician for the best possible comfort meds. ...Read more

My stomach hurts after eating. Is it better to take pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) or an antacid?
Can you give a 5yr old pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) he has a stomach ache and has thrown up twice
Which product: We rarely use any product with salicylates in kids under 16 due to a connection to liver failure & death called Reye syndrome. The kid would be better off just eating ice chips, popsicles pieces or chilled applesauce until his stomach settles. ...Read more
Would it be ok to give my 4 year old pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate)? if not what would you recommend I give him for an upset stomach/stomach pain?
Hello Doctor. How are you? I have a few pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) tablets that expired one year ago. I have a really bad stomach ache. Is it safe to take a pill?
Would use new: Generally good policy not to take expired medications, and I would get fresh antacids, or even try household baking soda if you feel this is from stomach acid. If recurrent, see MD. Ulcers (? aspirin/motrin), infection (e.g. H pylori), gall stones, etc may need to be considered. Seek MD esp if red flags eg increasing nausea/vomit, blood/melena (black stools), anemia, weight loss, fever ...Read more
