Pepcid (famotidine) long term: short answer - yes but my concern is given you age - why are you requiring either a proton pump inhibitor (prilosec) or an H2 blocker (pepcid) on a regular basis?? Assuming you have a medical condition requiring acid suppression - long term use may be appropriate. Not true: Side effects of prilosec are very rare and tend to occur in sick and hospitalized patients. If pepcid (famotidine) doesn't work and prilosec does work then stick with prilosec. You can have you magnesium check every few years for reassurance. ...Read more

GI meds: Hello, the medications you are taking are used for gerd, gastritis with possible peptic ulceration. The medications are very helpful especially when used together. The dosing looks good. Side effects can occur with any medication. Be sure to see your doctor, especially if you suspect and problems are still occurring. I have acid relfux ( acid coming up). PPIs ( Prilosec, Nexium, and Prevacid) give dizziness and swelling in my throat. Doc won't put me on prescription. Zantac and Pepcid isn't strong enough. No h.pylori. Should I take ppi regardless of side effects?

Reflux: Have you tried strict dietary measures like avoidance of caffeine, alcohol,nicotine,spices, and greasy foods which can loosen the sphincter or valve between the stomach contents and esophagus? You could try taking gaviscon as a preventative of gerd. Sometimes symptoms are not due to acid reflux but due to bile reflux which doesn't respond to ppi's or zantac (ranitidine). ...Read more

Pepcid (famotidine): Most people will not have any side affects from long-term use of Pepcid (famotidine). If this helps control your reflux symptoms, great. However, if you have not been formally diagnosed with GERD, you owe it to yourself to have a visit to a gastroenterologist. Yes: According to epocrates...No black box warnings exist for pepcid (famotidine). Only in renal insufficiency dosis should be adjusted. There has been reports associating Pepcid (famotidine) with cardiac arrhythmias and av blocks but I am not aware about chf. In general i think is not absolutely contraindicated. Unless a cardiologist recommends to stop it i don't think it is contraindicated. ...Read more
