Can Pepcid (famotidine) be taken with cold medicine?Taken over-the-counter cold meds, liquid and pills, but have really bad heartburn.
It's OK: Pepcid is a type of histamine blocker that is not found in any cold products. You need to be careful with cold meds because they have multiple ingredients. I advise my patients to take only OTC meds that have 1 ingredient! If you need pain relief - take ibuprofen. If you need cough suppressant - take robitussin (guaifenesin). If you need decongestant - take sudafed. Even I get confused in that aisle!!! ...Read more
I need to know if Pepcid and Nexium (esomeprazole) are one in the same. Have difficulty swallowing- is Pepcid available in liquid form? Is it covered by Medicare?
Not the same: Pepcid is a H2 blocker, nexium (esomeprazole) is a proton-pump inhibitor. Either should work for GERD. You should call the 800 number on your pharmacy card to ask about coverage. Since they are both now OTC it is less likely they will be covered. Nexium (esomeprazole) comes as "granules" that can be dissolved in fluid. ...Read more
Effectiveness of apple cider vinegar for reflux? Was taking famotidine - gave me headaches. Other benefits? Is capsule form as effective as liquid?
Works well for many: Like many natural therapies, there is no formal research i know of on apple cider vinegar for reflux, but many find it effective. On this website 21 of 23 who tried it report it effective: http://earthclinic.Com/cures/heartburn.Html & people find it useful for many other things. But this is symptomatic & it is more important to address the cause- seehttp://www.Healthy-eating-politics.Com/gerd.Html. ...Read more

Safe to take Pepcid (famotidine) AC (20mg) daily? Works wonders for me. Concerned about long-term effects the medication might have on me however.
Check with MD: as to why you need to be on any antireflux/acid reducing medicine. Rule out problems that might occur over thr long term; address other issues re: weight, meds, alcohol, diet, tobacco, that may affect reflux and GERD. Lowest dose of least potent med for shortest period of time to do the job is a reasonable approach. Chronic reflux canlead to problems, including esophageal cancer. See MD ...Read more
Safe to take Pepcid (famotidine) AC daily? I typically only need 10mg. Sometimes 20mg. Rarely 40mg/24 hrs. How can daily use of Pepcid (famotidine) adversely affect us?
Pepcid (famotidine): Most people will not have any side affects from long-term use of Pepcid (famotidine). If this helps control your reflux symptoms, great. However, if you have not been formally diagnosed with GERD, you owe it to yourself to have a visit to a gastroenterologist. Chronic reflux can result in Barrett's esophagus in some patients, which can put you at a higher risk of cancer. Talk to your doctor. Good luck. ...Read more

Sometimes it takes 45-60 minutes before I feel relief from acid when I take Pepcid (famotidine) AC (10mg). Is that normal to take so long?
Should be ok if...: If a person had no problems taking Pepcid AC in the recent past for some medical condition, and separately had no problem taking Pepto-Bismol in the recent past, then she should be ok taking the medications at the same time. If worried, she can ask her doctor who prescribed the medications. Sometimes, a brand name (such as Pepto-Bismol) changes its ingredients as the years go by. ...Read more
Probably: Most medications stored in dry and cool condition remain effective even months after the expiration date but obviously this is dependent on the individual drug. At 8 months of pregnancy, the fetus is fully formed and thus Pepcid (famotidine) AC would not likely affect the fetus and will likely remain effective if it has been stored in a cool and dry place. No drug be taken if unneeded. ...Read more
How does Pepcid (famotidine) AC interact with alcohol? Is it ok to consume both at the same time?
Not good idea: In general, one should not take alcohol with medications. If you have to take pepcid, (famotidine) i would be concerned for possible gastritis and sometimes even ulcers as alcohol can be a causative factor. Best is to avoid alcohol for a while and let your stomach calm down. If symptoms persist, you may need to see a gastroenterologist. Of course, your liver will also thank you. ...Read more
Is it safe to take Pepcid (famotidine) AC or its generic version while on 140mg of methadone per day?
Yes: Pepcid is a common medication used for stomach acid symptoms. Zantac (ranitidine) and tagamet are similar, and all of them are now available over-the-counter and are known as "h-2 blockers". You can use it for treatment of indigestion and is ok to use with methadone, but if your stomach continues to bother you be sure to see your primary care physician. ...Read more
Prophylaxis: It depends on the severity of the allergy. Some people try to use pepcid (famotidine) before eating shellfish to ward off allergic symptoms. Pepcid (famotidine) is a histamine blocker so it may be used for treatment of allergic reactions when they occur but I awoud advise you not to rely on their ability to prevent them especially if your shellfish allergy involves airway compromise or any breathing difficulty. ...Read more
Pepcid (famotidine) AC is not helping my heartburn, is there another OTC i can take? Would taking it every 12 hours help?
Is it really GERD?: Yes, Prilosec otc is stronger but gerd can be due to diseases that impair esophageal function, cause inadequate saliva, gastric outlet narrowing, gastroparesis, small bowel pathology, etc. Damage from inadequate treatment may result in esophageal ulcers, scarring, narrowing, pre-cancer (barretts). Gerd is also mimicked by heart, lung, gallbladder, pancreas, & neurologic disease. At 56 get checked. ...Read more
See below.: You cannot be allergic to alcohol - that is impossible. You can only be allergic to things that have proteins. Alcohol chemically has no proteins. You may be sensitive to alcohol. For example, it may give you heart burn. If that is the case, Pepcid (famotidine) may help but i would not advise that. Rather, i'd advise not using alcohol at all or limiting the amount and frequency so it doesn't affect you longer. ...Read more
Been getting acid reflux (felt in neck) daily. Indicative of something detrimental? Could tea and/or yogurt cause this? 10mg Pepcid (famotidine) AC stops it.
Acid reflux per se:
is not detrimental and is treatable..HOWEVER an evaluation by a Gastroenterologist is probably a good idea since some esophageal; disorders need special attention (eg "Barrett's esophogas")
Hope this helps!
