Some patients experience hair loss, which is temporary and will grow back when this drug is stopped. If you have the gastrointestinal symptoms, we recommend small meals, good mouth care, sucking on sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum. Takes longer: Elmiron (pentosan) takes about 3 months to start giving you relief from interstitial cystitis symptoms. Typically the other treatment is bladder instillations with a solution of lidocaine, Heparin and sodium bicarbonate. A few thoughts: If you have no insurance, perhaps you can try and contact your State to see if they participate in the Accountable Care Act. Some pharmaceutical companies have compassionate aid for those who need their products but cannot afford them - contact the company for assistance. Don't be afraid: I have treated hundreds of patients with the medication and the overwhelming majority do very well. The medication is very safe and effective. The downside is it is typically taken 3 times per day and it does not work fast. It will typically take 3 months to begin to be effective. Rarely I have seen patients with hair loss but it is typically seen as additional hair in the sink or brush. ...Read more
