Does not work: Pentasa (mesalamine) & other Mesalamine (5-asa) medications are anti-inflammatory medications that only work on the thin lining of the colon (large intestine). They can work for mild ulcerative colitis. They do not work for crohn's disease which affects the deeper layers of the gut and affects other parts of the gut other than the colon.
