Peginterferon Alfa Medication
Will I be able to drink alcohol while taking the medications ribavirin and peg intron (peginterferon alfa 2b)?
Depends: From a hepatitis c treatment standpoint, using Pegasys (peginterferon alfa 2a) in combination with Ribavirin and a protease inhibitor can have dramatic treatment effect (i.e. Lead to cure of hepatitis c depending on the stage of your liver disease). Now "side-effects" can range from "flu-like" symptoms to lab abnormalities, depression, rash, GI symptoms, anxiety/irritability, insomnia, etc. Discuss with your doctor. ...Read more
Report it: When you miss a dose of peg interferon, you should report it to your treating physician. If it is just one dose, chances are you may have it injected later that day or week. If it is not feasible, i think you will still need to continue on with your treatment, as one dose is unlikely to change the trend you've had. Talk to you doc, though. ...Read more
Talk to your doctor!: Some of the common side effects of Pegasys (peginterferon alfa 2a) (peg-interferon alfa-2a) are fatigue, depression, headache, fever, low white cell count, muscle pain and chills. However, there are potentially more serious side effects as well. The risk of developing side effects may depend on your other health problems. You should talk to your doctor. ...Read more
I would wait to use: Usually when being treated with peg interferon and ribavirin, you become immunosuppresed (i.e. Low immune system), so any other injections like juvederm can lead to local inflammation/skin reactions, infections and confound the other symptoms that you might be experiencing while undergoing treatment. I would wait to use juvederm until you finish your treatment therapy. ...Read more
Usually not: In general, once you have finished your treatment with pegasys, (peginterferon alfa 2a) side effects/symptoms that you were having during treatment slowly disappear, but can take up to 6 months and in some instances 1 year although rare. It can result in autoimmune disorders, although this is also rare. I would discuss your concerns with your treating physician for other rare long term side effects. ...Read more

Most hepatitis c drug companies that combine their new drugs with interferon and Ribavirin use pegasys (peginterferon alfa 2a). But your provider will use what he/she is used to. ...Read more
I was treated with pegintron & rebitol for HCV & my count increased from 130 to 460 at 48 th vial can I complete with pegasys (peginterferon alfa 2a)?
No benefit: The us preventative services task force recommends that pegintron and Pegasys (peginterferon alfa 2a) are similar enough that if someone did not achieve cure with pegintron, they should not attempt retreatment with Pegasys (peginterferon alfa 2a) since it will likely not help. Talk to your provider about new options in hepatitis c drug development and when they might be available for your genotype of hepatitis c. ...Read more
