Breastmilk/formula: Small amounts of fluids frequently given are important to avoid dehydration. Nursing is fine for breastfed babies. You can also try syringe feeds of formula. Who recommends 5 tsp fluids every 5 to 10 minutes. Smaller volumes tend to be better tolerated than full feedings.

Is there pedialyte for adults?

Is there pedialyte for adults?

For all ages, but: Pedialyte is a rehydration solution that is balanced to the specific needs of infants and children but can be used by all. However, the average adult with a bit of vomiting & diarrhea can get similar benefit by diluting gateraid half/half with water. The adult system has more resilience in such a setting. Things like apple sauce, jello and old fashion chicken soup can also be beneficial.

How does pedialyte work?

How does pedialyte work?

Simple fluid: Pedilyte is essentially the same thing as the IV fluid your doc would give to keep your kid hydrated. You just get it in through the stomach in small frequent amounts, rather than through a tube in a vein. Since it requires no digestive work, it allows your gut to rest and heal while it is being used.

What can I give baby for the nausea to help her keep the pedialyte in her system?

Vomiting: Try letting her belly rest for awhile, after she vomits. At least an hour. Then only give sips of the Pedialyte, for about a 1/2 hr, to see if it stays down. Then try small amounts, like 1-2 oz/hr., after that. There are medicines to help vomiting, but they are prescription, so she would need to be seen.

My 5 month old son has been throwing up since last night. What can I do? How much pedialyte should I give him?

My 5 month old son has been throwing up since last night. What can I do? How much pedialyte should I give him?

Depends: If baby is still wetting diapers every 6hrs he is holding on to enough to try home care. Start withbreast milk or electrolyte solution in small amts every 10 minutes (1/2-1oz) either by bottle or a tablespoon. After a while with no barfing you can up the volume and decrease the frequency. If baby is not taking well, too sleepy or you get a bad vibe, contact your dr & discuss timing for an evaluation.

Can you mix pedialyte with formula?

Can you mix pedialyte with formula?

Yes but why?: We usually use pedialyte for vomiting and diarrhea to maintain electrolyte balance. Formula with water is balanced and has appropriate nutrients so it really isn't necessary to mix pedialyte and formula. I might suggest using a teaspoon or two of formal in a bottle of pedialyte for a child who won't drink anything but milk. This gives the taste of milk with more pedialyte.
