Yes you can.: Solpadeine is tylenol with caffeine. Targin is a trade name for oxycodone with naloxone (the former is an opiate analgesic, the latter is a receptor blocker to prevent addiction or overdose). Solpadeine will augment the 5mg targin and make it work better without any severe side effects in the short term, with the possible exception of caffeine induced insomnia. ...Read more

What does "adequate hydration" have to do with preventing vomiting? [not dehydrat from, paul cohen? ]
Nothing: When vomiting you must provide adequate hydration; otherwise you will become dehydrated. If you are not able to keep fluids down and replace the losses you would need to be in the hospital getting IV fluids until the problem is passed and you can again take your fluids orally. To prevent vomiting you may need assistance with medications such as phenergan (promethazine). ...Read more
One dr one your board (Paul grin) says the mortality rate for cleft palate surgery is 1 in 300 while another says 1 in 100, 000. Huge discrepancy. Why?
Studies: I cannot speak for any doctor nor the actual figures reported. First, I do not believe there is any consensus on the figures as such studies of mortality rate for this procedure are scarce and will vary based upon who does the study, the size of the sampling, the geographic sampling, the year of the study, how the information was collected, etc. Concentrate on the need and benefit of the surgery. ...Read more

Hey I'm Paul and 16 yrs. I was playing soccer and while running I hurt my toe it isn't swollen or red put hurts when I try to walk on it?
Let it recover...: You need to stay off of it, apply ice to the area in question rest and elevate it. If the problem does not improve in a day, you should have it evaluated. If the toe improves, then you can hold off for another day or two. As long as the toe is improving with time, it is probably not seriously injured. To remove all doubt have your family doctor or a Healthtap specialist evaluate it. ...Read more

Knee hypertends very often hurts but pain subsides shortly after I have a physical next week but I need her to sign off for softball. Do I tell her?
Yes: If your knee hyperextends you may have one of the hyperdistensibility syndromes which can affect other joints as well. And in any case you should have a physical therapist show you proper muscle building exercises and possible splinting during sports. The exercises will build muscle and ligament and tendon strength to protect your joints. An arthroscopy means an Orthopedist who can refer you. ...Read more

Crepitus: Kneecap cartilage degeneration (patellofemoral arthrosis) can cause your kneecaps to hurt and make noise like 'rice crispies' (orthopedic term is crepitus).Very common and sometimes hard to treat. It is possible: Depending on where you were hit, it is possible to fracture your leg if there was enough force. More than likely, you just have a deep bruise from the hit. The only definitive way to rule out a fracture would be to get an x-ray of the leg. ...Read more

Shoulder issues ok I have played softball 7 years. Going on 8.I am now a junior. My 8th grade year I started to get a real sharp pain in my shoulder. It got worss and worss I couldn't even sleep at night. I went to the doctors, got m.R.S and they all told
I recommend that you see a orthopedic sports medicine physician. I am very concerned about your symptoms. I don't believe that as motivated as you are that the shoulder is normal. It sounds like you have some form of rotator cuff tear, or a torn labrum (cartilage).
Often this requires surgery. Putting your arm in a sling will probably be a bad thing as you will lose mobility in your shoulder. See the physician soon, as your season is truly at risk. Best wishes. ...Read more
