Dr. Ferber's book: Best know book is Dr. Richard Ferber's "How to Solve Your CHild's SLeep problems" His general approach is to put the baby in his/her crib awake and leave for a set period - say five minutes - then go back in if still crying to comfort the baby and then leave again but for a longer period of time.
