Pathological Liar Treatment
I sometimes fabricate things or lie to make me seem more interesting to myself. I am aware it's not true. Am I a pathological liar? Is it my OCD?
Lying: Is a bad habit, PERHAPS pathological or perhaps not. Break the cycle by stopping yourself mid-sentence when you become aware of what you are doing. If the lie is out, tell the person you exaggerated. See a mental health professional to see the extent of this and if treatment is needed. Congrats on being aware of this. As you get free of this behavior life can get better. Peace and health.
Pathological liar: Also called pseudologia fantastica, is habitual or compulsive lying act which occurs over years, occuring in 1:1, 000 & onset around age 16. It is not delusional, since the stories told have some element of truth in them, and when confronted, the liar admits they are false. The motive for lying is internal, and the lies tend to present the person favorably such as bravery. Tx is psychotherapy.
You are the best: Judge of whether you are a compulsive liar. Are you lying on a regular basis. Do people close to you catch you in lies on a frequent basis? If you answered yes, you probably have a problem and should consult with a psychologist for therapy. It is a hard problem to overcome since it usually begins in childhood, but it important to get help if you want to have healthy relationships.
A plain old liar: Can lie for many reasons - especially to stay out of trouble, to make them self look good, for some type of gain. A pathological liar on the other hand - can lie about things that don't matter. There doesn't need to be any "gain" from lying. They can lie so much that they forget what lies they told. They can lose track of when they are lying ; when they are telling the truth.
Congratulation on: Wanting to help yourself overcome pathological lying. Medication may play a role but a mental health ;professional would be appropriate. He/she can help you determine the root of your condition and provide strategies to help you change. Peace and good health.
Can you tell me what you suggest if someone constantly accuses someone of being a pathological liar, what are they suffering from?
If the accuser is a: Pathological liar then it's called Projection. If the accused is a pathological liar then it's the truth. Check out the topic w/a trusted friend or relative to see if the accuser is accurate and see a mental health professional to change it. If not accurate think about the relationship you have w/that person which may need an adjustment. Peace and good health.
Probably not: If a 44 year old has been compulsively lying for many yrs it is not going to be easy to stop. It is ingrained in his personality. That doesn't mean that you can't get help. Developing a therapeutic relationship will help you understand the roots of this problem and the therapist should also be able to help you become aware when you are repeating this pattern. 1st step is your motivation to stop.
Is there anything for pathological lying other than therapy, specifically a medication? I have heard dimethyltryptamine (dmt) will help is that true?
No shortcuts: Pathological lying has many factors which contribute to it. There are reasons but you have to face them. Looking for a quick fix or medication is probably not the best answer. This is something worth trying to figure out now when you're young and still able make decisions that will effect the rest of your life. Therapy is the answer.See 1 more doctor answer
Urge him to get help: From a psychologist. If he says he will, don't believe him. If he says he did, don't believe him. Unless he will let you talk to the doctor and give the doctor permission to talk to you, don't believe him.
