Paternity Testing (Overview)

Paternity testing: a test, particularly of dna or genetic traits, to determine if a given man can be excluded as the biological father of a given child. If the tested man cannot be excluded, a probability of paternity is issued. A paternity test can exclude someone from being the biological father with a 0% probability of paternity, if there are at least 3 genetic markers that are not shared.

I was needing information for a lab that does paternity testing .?

LabCorp/Quest etc...: You can call the information hotline from either company to inquire about paternity testing and then arrange for the test, without the need of a doctor order. What is non-invasive prenatal paternity testing?

What is non-invasive prenatal paternity testing?

NIPP: Non invasive paternity testing is a technology based on detection of fetal cells in the mother's blood. A variety of specialty labs offer this service and cite the ability to find such results as early as 8 weeks into the pregnancy. Traditional testing requires fetal cells from invasive procedures like sampling amniotic fluid by needle or the placental cells. ...Read more

Is there a noninvasive prenatal paternity testing company that is credible?

Is there a noninvasive prenatal paternity testing company that is credible?

Unlikely : The key words of your question are credible and non-invasive.There are reports of maternal blood being used for screening, yet this technology is far from being accepted in court. Samples of the fetal membranes (cvs) or amniocentesis are accepted methods, but both pose some risk to mother and baby. Most paternity issues are handled by off site labs, hospitals or patients can obtain the test kits. ...Read more

What are some recommended locations or labs to do non-invasive paternity testing in texas (dfw) area. What are your thoughts on the tests accuracy?

What are some recommended locations or labs to do non-invasive paternity testing in texas (dfw) area. What are your thoughts on the tests accuracy?

The most accurate: Test is a blood test. Physician-ordered comparative genomic hybridization, costs ~ $2, 000/person. Each putative father usually pays for his own & shares the cost of the newborn's test. Saliva testing by proprietary labs (e.g., 1-800-whosyourdaddy) are often inaccurate. If either putative father has a family history of an inheritable genetic disorder, his insurance may cover part of the cost. ...Read more

Is paternity testing done at all the regular lab locations?

Is paternity testing done at all the regular lab locations?

Only at select labs: The two major laboratory companies--quest and labcorp have few locations in the country to run maternity testing requests. The blood samples can be drawn from vuirtually any local laboratory location, but then the samples are sent to the specific lab. So, as far as your testing need is concerned, it can be drawn anywhere and you will get the result--this u don't even need a doctor order! good luck. ...Read more

Should I get paternity testing done if sex with a guy happened 2 months prior to the starting of my pregnancy countdown?

Your call: I have no idea if you're asking for advice or need encouragement ? Is paternity DNA testing while pregnant against the law?

Is paternity DNA testing while pregnant against the law?

Likely legal: Prenatal paternity testing is usually an optional test and would be done at the request of the patient and is not likely to be covered by insurance. It would require tissue samples from your fetus by an amniocentesis and from each prospective father (usually blood or buccal swab) - which would of course require the cooperation of the prospective fathers. ...Read more

Got two men tested for paternity test on my bby. I only slept with those two about two or three weeks apart. Both test came back negative how is that?

Impossible...: If you only had sex with two men, then one of them is the father. Either there was a "testing error" (labs are reliable, if they got the correct specimen this is very unlikely), one of the two men didn't actually get tested, or you have forgotten about another possible father. Good luck. ...Read more

How soon can you get a paternity test done?

How soon can you get a paternity test done?

After birth: This can be done on cells obtained from the womb by amniocentesis or from the placenta by cvs. Both procedures have some risk to mom and baby and paternity issues are not considered worthy of the risk. As soon as the kid is born, material can be obtained & sent. There are several commercial labs that do this and the hospital should have a number for information. It is not covered by insurance. ...Read more

Is there a paternity test that can be performed prenatally?

Is there a paternity test that can be performed prenatally?

Yes: There is a non-invasive paternity blood test that analyizes fetal dna circulating in the mother’s blood. The baby’s dna is then compared to the dna taken (by buccal swab) from the potential father. This test can be performed as early as 10 weeks into the pregnancy. I highly recommend labtest md for testing. They have several locations. www.labtestmd.com. ...Read more

Is it possible to get a paternity test before the child is born?

Is it possible to get a paternity test before the child is born?

With significnt risk: Dna can be obtained prior to birth by inserting a needle in the bag of waters & withdrawing fetal cells for study. There are some medical reasons for this procedure that make the risks worth taking. However, curiosity about paternity is not one of them. The procedure carries some risk of infection or injury to both mother & child & rarely causes death. ...Read more

Is there anything that can affect the results of a paternity test?

Not much.: Telling which of two identical twins is the father is a challenge, of course; also, "mosaicism" - having 2 different genetic populations of cells in one body - is possible; a sperm could come from one population, and the tested cell from another.
