Patent Urachus Repair (Overview)

During fetal life, there is a connection between the umbilical cord and the dome of the bladder. It usually obliterates before or soon after birth. If it remains patent, one can have leakage of urine from the umbilicus or infections of the lower midline abdominal wall. Then the patent urachus should be removed and the dome of the bladder repaired via an infraumbilical or lower midline incision.

Yes, but is so rare: The urachus or its remnants goes away when one is a young baby. It is possible, but very rare, for a urachal cyst to remain and get diagnosed in adulthood. That can happen if the cyst gets infected and appears as lump under the belly button, maybe with some pain and pus discharge. The infected cyst can be treated and surgically removed. If someone has no cyst, poking his navel will not leak urine. ...Read more

See MD ASAP: You really need to see your doctor immediately. You are describing signs of infection and you dont want that to get worse. You will likely need treatment hopefully just with antibiotics but things can get bad so would not waste time seeing your surgeon. ...Read more

I have been struggling for well over a yr since open shoulder repairs, with now chronic pain and fatique, odd m.S.-like symptoms. Can surg do this?

The symptoms don't sound like a post surgical syndrome, but possibly you contracted a chronic slow growing infection while in hospital. Mycoplasma is one candidate, and resistant strains have been found increasingly in hospitals. Get checked out. ...Read more
