Patent Urachus Repair (Overview)

During fetal life, there is a connection between the umbilical cord and the dome of the bladder. It usually obliterates before or soon after birth. If it remains patent, one can have leakage of urine from the umbilicus or infections of the lower midline abdominal wall. Then the patent urachus should be removed and the dome of the bladder repaired via an infraumbilical or lower midline incision.

1)can patent urachus suddenly occur out of the blue at age of 20 in men?2)can poking ur belly button punture a hole that lets urine leak out?

1) Yes. 2) No.: A patent urachus is a still open congenital connection between the umbilicus (bellybutton) and the dome of the bladder. Poking your bellybutton will not cause it. A patent urachus is manifested by urine leaking out of the bellybutton or infection of the abdominal wall or bladder. Although we usually see it in younger children, it can become apparent in an older child or adult. Surgery is needed. ...Read more

Maybe: Many antibiotics can cause nausea in some patients. If you still have a urachus, and its causing problems, see a urologist to discuss the pros and cons of surgery to remove it. Hope this helps! ...Read more

How do you repair a patent ?Foramen ovale?

How do you repair a patent ?Foramen ovale?

Surgery: Most patent foramen ovales (pfo) do not have to be repaired. However if repair is indicated due to failure or respiratory issues, it would require open median sternotomy and probably 5-6 days in the hospital. This of course depends on the age of the patient. ...Read more

I have been struggling for well over a yr since open shoulder repairs, with now chronic pain and fatique, odd m.S.-like symptoms. Can surg do this?

Not Likely: The symptoms sound serious enough that you should get a thorough evaluation. The symptoms don't sound like a post surgical syndrome, but possibly you contracted a chronic slow growing infection while in hospital. Mycoplasma is one candidate, and resistant strains have been found increasingly in hospitals. Get checked out. ...Read more

I am an FTM Transgender and was wondering if it would be a problem to chest bind having an open VSD repair as an infant?

No, unlikely, but...: I would like to congratulate you for having done well after open VSD repair in infancy. Artificial chest binding to forge FTM physical stature itself should not affect existing heart function if it is sound. But in reality, it is for your best interest to ask your doctor who has monitored your transgendering process, which demands a lifelong personal & professional dedication and cooperation. ...Read more

What are the most current indications for endovascular repair vs. Open endartere?

What are the most current indications for endovascular repair vs. Open endartere?

Dependes on location: An aortic aneurism is best repaired with endovascular stents but a carotid blockage responds better to endarterectomy. Renal artery lesions can be approached endovascularly in most cases but it they are near the aorta or due to fibromuscular dysplasia an open surgical approach gives better results as long as the risk of surgery is tolerable. ...Read more

Why would it be best for an open hernia repair?

Why would it be best for an open hernia repair?

Surgeon experience: Recurrence rates can be higher in laparoscopic surgery based on the degree of experience and techniques used. Often a "bilateral" or both sided repair can be done via small incisions. If it's only one sided, the "extra" dissection during laparoscopic surgery of the opposite side is unnecessary and may pose potential for additional scarring. ...Read more

I had open hernia repair last thursday--and there so much info out there about when to return to exercise. What is the correct answer?

Take your time: There are many different opinions on how soon a person can resume exercise postop. I like to have patients wait 4 wks and then slowly increase activity based on how they feel. Be smart and don't overdo it and listen to your doctors advice. ...Read more

How expensive is the patent ductus arteriosus repair?

How expensive is the patent ductus arteriosus repair?

Widely variable: The cost of PDA repair is widely variable both by location of where in the US it is done and the procedure performed (surgery vs. catheter). Most are now done by catheter with no incision and less than a one day stay. This is a great (and fair) question to ask your doctor's office/hospital where this will be done. In these days of managed care, I believe its best to know what you are getting into. ...Read more

How do you decide between an open or laparoscopic hernia repair ?

Your choice...: Open repair is associated with more pain and a longer recovery than lap (by 1-2 weeks), but only if the lap surgeon is very experienced with the technique. Choose what the surgeon does best. If you want lap, find an experienced surgeon with at least previous 250 cases. Not foolproof, but it can start the conversation. If the surgeon does open, and you want lap, ask about a referral to a lap surgeon ...Read more

Besides a larger incision site what is the difference between open hernia repair and laparscopic hernia repair?

Lap is from behind.: The open approach is an anterior approach or one that repairs the hernia through the skin incision above the hernia. The laparoscopic repair is a posterior approach to the hernia . This technique from behind the hernia inlapherently has the advantage of a wider overlap of patch material which yields a lower recurrence rate in many cases. ...Read more
