Passing Mucus After Bowel Resection
Bowel resection is the surgical removal of a portion of the small or large intestines due to an advancing disease. This procedure is performed if a portion of the bowel has been without oxygen for a long period and there is tissue death (necrosis), following discovery of some types of cancer, advanced infection of the bowel, or if the patient has repeated or persistent bowel obstruction (blockage). Some patients with diseases like ulcerative colitis or familial colon cancer may elect to have the procedure done to prevent ...Read more

The "roux-en-y loop" is the segment of bowel that is actually surgically connected to the bile duct. Prognosis depends on the disease process requiring the procedure. ...Read more
My husband had bowel resection surgery two weeks ago and is not eating much due to a lot of pain while digesting food. What can he take for relief?
Discuss w ur doctor: Pain at incision after surgery common, but relation to eating more concerning. Discuss w your doctor underlying cause. Avoid less digestible or fermentable foods (see FODMAP reduction) such as broccoli, beans, cabbage and consider blenderizing foods, avoid constipating foods like bananas. Ginger, camomile, mints can soothe. Keep stools soft eg docusate. Happy to consult and review your case ...Read more
Best treatment: All primary colon tumors must be resected. If localized, cure is very high. If mets already present it is still essential to remove primary since latter is polyclonal while mets to liver or lung are monoclonal and won't spread. If primary left to treat mets then new clones develop in primary and will continue spreading to new sites. Always resect the primary colon tumor with margins. ...Read more

After a small bowel resection for Crohn's & now over 25 hospitalized bowel obstructions later, will HGH strengthen intestines, if not what should I do?
Not likely: Focus on making sure your inflammatory bowel disease is well controlled and overall good health. That means making sure you have good nutrition, are physically active, sleeping well and have good social support. Try to avoid for looking for too much pharmacotherapy for good health. Some is necessary but remember, particularly with hormones, it's easy create problems. Best of luck. ...Read more
I had small bowel resection and repair if incarcerated hernia ib sepember this year im now getting pain in my left groin?
Post operative pain: It is common to have incision pain after surgery. Pain in the groin can be also caused by nerve entrapment, and scar tissue that forms. If there is vomiting at times one should be on the lookout for fibrous bands of tissue that can develop which can lead to a partial obstruction of the bowel. Constipation following surgery can also lead to the groin pain that has developed. ...Read more
Is it normal to have light bleeding from the rectum after small bowel resection? It seems to be round the feces but not in it. There's no pain.
Maybe: Slight bleeding could be from hemorrhoids or other anal condition. Cirrhosis can cause abnormally enlarged veins to occur in the gastrointestinal tract that could bleed. Best not to wonder & best is to contact your own surgeon who performed the surgery to get proper information for your own specific situation & conditions. ...Read more

What could be the cause of left side dull pain/ache radiating to lower back, gas, fullness. Had an open surgical bowel resection in 2008.
Had bowel resection 5 weeks ago. 3 days ago I developed pain in the rectum during bowel movements. I was told to take antispasmodic - anything else?
Stool softener: At 5 wks post colon resection the anastomosis is healing tightly. Any firm stool in left colon passing thru the stitch line can cause pain especially with a low anterior resection. The diet should be kept soft without roughage and stool softener like Colace (docusate sodium) used so that the stitch line won't be irritated. ...Read more

Mother was just told she has a mass in her splenic flexure. She was told she will need bowel resection. Is this a typically fast movin cancer?
Depends: If this is colon cancer, it all depends upon how early it was caught. If caught early, it's possible that the cancer can be completely cured with surgery. The longer you wait, the more likely it will spread. Typically the surgeon will also look at the liver to see if there is a lesion in there that needs removal as well. ...Read more

I have a 9cm ovarian cyst attached to my bowel. Was referred to gynecologic oncologist for bowel resection. Scared ill wake up with a colostomy bag?
Small chance only: I do not know what exactly you have. However, if there is no inflammation in the area, which I believe it is the case and if the size of the colon above the lesion is not too distended and if resection is needed you should not end up with a colostomy. However, you never know what will the surgeon see/find when he/she enters your abdomen. So, if all is relatively "clean" inside, your should be fine. ...Read more
Had small bowel resection (5ft), colon blockage removed, appendectomy, and hernia repair done in emerg surgery. Tons of side effects 3months later. Help?
Side Effects: The answer to your questions depends on the side effects you are having. Small bowel resection can affect stool transit time as well as nutrient absorption. Adhesions from any abdominal procedure may be a source of discomfort for some. I suggest you speak to your primary care doc about your symptoms to identify the most likely source of your symptoms. From there you can make a plan. ...Read more
