Talk with your doc: Be a good detective. Think about your clues. What happened right before you passed out? Any palpitations? Change in medications/herbs/supplements? How well did you eat that day [any skipped meals]? How long were you out? These are some of the things to talk about with your doc. ...Read more

If had a meningitis and was treated before, is there any possiblity that he can get it again or pass it to other people?

If had a meningitis and was treated before, is there any possiblity that he can get it again or pass it to other people?

Yes & no: Since there are dozens of germs that can cause it & many are bacteria (like a strep throat),a prior case does not prevent it from ever happening again. You can not pass it to others if you have been treated/cured, but might in the pre-treatment period. The frequency of getting it again is small, sort of like lightening striking you again. Rare immune or structural defects could make it possible. ...Read more

A month ago my son had four bi passes from a man and fooled around. Now his father wants him taken for psych treatment?

Sexuality not diseas: Sexual experimentation is a normal part of development, and is not a mental disorder. If your son himself has questions or is distressed by his own sexuality or orientation, then your son may wish to seek out therapy. But a father taking him for psych eval or treatment will only strain father-son relationship. Best to accept son & let him decide. Suggest std testing if unprotected sex. ...Read more

I've had brain tumor surgery and 28 treatments of radiation since March .I've always ran low BP. In the pass week it's been running high 155/94.is thi?

Depends: It depends on what medications or your stress levels or both. If you are taking medications like steroids(think decadron) it's possible that a medication is causing this. Chemotherapeutics to treat cancers can also cause this. In rare cases a brain bleed can lead to increased blood pressure, and slow heart rates(Cushing's reflex). Nonetheless let your doctors know about this. ...Read more

At my grandma’s rehab center, i’d see that the aids did all the work and the lpns told them what to do, and the rns passed out drugs. Is that the way it’s done?

Different work: There are multiple kinds of "work" in a rehab center or hospital. Some of this you never see, or may not recognize as "work". Making sure the medications are correctly prepared, documented, and given is work also. Different training, different responsibilities and tasks. ...Read more

Hello. : Hello. These are interesting symptoms. I know that you said that you have googled it to try to determine the cause. Have you been evaluated for it? Your symptoms are complex and unusual. They really can't be adequately assessed through an email format. It sounds like it is not exclusively occurring while asleep, when falling asleep or when waking from sleep.(?) i suggest a comprehesive neurological evaluation if one has not already been done. If symptoms occur just prior to falling asleep or as you are waking up, a polysomnogram (sleep study) would be a valuable diagnostic tool. If these are negative, then a psychiatric evaluation might prove helpful. Take care. ...Read more

If our baby passes genetic testing, does that mean it will be born without genetic defects?

If our baby passes genetic testing, does that mean it will be born without genetic defects?

No: Unfortunately having a normal serum screen does not mean that a fetus has no genetic abnormalities. Even genetic amniocentesis will not test for all conditions a baby might have at birth. These tests combined with an expert ultrasound around 18-22 weeks can help rule out congenital anomalies and genetic disorders. But testing can't tell parents with 100% certainty if their child will be normal. ...Read more

I've gotten inherited a mitochondrial disorder from my mother. Can i pass this trait on to a son?

Yes: There are >100 different mitochondrial disorders, each with their own unique pattern of inheritance. If the mutation is in mitochondrial dna in a mother, then all of the children will inherit the disease, though the severity can be difficult to predict sometimes. Other mitochondrial disorders are from mutations on "regular" chromosomes, and the patterns of inheritance follow a number of patterns. ...Read more
