Absolutely: While no med works for everyone, historically maois including Parnate (tranylcypromine) are considered to be the most effective class of antidepressant, as they increase the amounts of all three major neurotransmitters thought to be involved in the treatment of depression. Try something new?: 27 years is a long time to be on any antidepressant. You missed all of the ssris, first released in the us in 1988, as well as newer non-ssri antidepressants. There are also augmentation strategies, non-medication treatments such as tms, and of course various types of psychotherapy. Not to mention lots of self-help strategies too. Why not go for a re-evaluation and consider a new approach? ...Read more

Assistance program: There is another leukotriene pathway medication called zileuton cr, but it is brand-name only and requires monitoring liver function periodically. However, you should ask your doctor about the patient assistance programs through the drug manufacturers that make singulair (montelukast) and/or zileuton.
