Parathyroid Tumor (Overview)

There are 4 parathyroid glands. One each situated in upper and lower pole region of the thyroid. The glands which are soft and no larger than 3-4 mm are almost flat. The tumor is firm and round, and may expand the gland out. The tumors may or may not be symptomatic and based on overexpression of the parathyroid hormone. Should gland migrate say into mediastinum then imaging used to define .

Blood: The diagnosis is made by a combination of elevated calcium and PTH (parathormone). These are blood tests. Sometimes vitamin d levels, phosphate and chloride levels are helpful.
