Papaya Enzyme Heartburn
Controversial: Since it hasn't been tested in a controlled study, medical community recommends against it. Green papaya reportedly can cause pre-term labor. As an enzyme (i.e. Protein) it may not survive stomach acid. However, there are many anecdotal reports of its benefit for heartburn. Others claim milk worked best for them. Advise low-fat/skim milk since fat stimulates acid secretion. ...Read more

Needed?: Ask yourself if you really need these-your body makes plenty of acid already, as well as digestive enzymes, so unless you have a proven deficiency, stop taking them and see if your symptoms disappear! if not, see your GI doc to investigate for other causes of dyspepsia. ...Read more
Are digestive enzyme supplements helpful during pregnancy in alleviating symptoms such as heartburn and or constipation and or gas/bloating?

Changes in the types of foods, the size of meals, the body position during/after meals, etc..., can help symptoms somewhat. An ob-gyn or G.I. Doctor may evaluate to see if symptoms are typical for a pregnancy. ...Read more

If too much the excess acidity can directly lead to symptoms, however too little stomach acid can lead to decreased digestion of food, which then is digested further by bacteria in GI track which results in the production of gas which causes indigestion. Most people probably have too little acid not too much. ...Read more
If you have heartburn sometimes, or just milder aches sometimes, is there any bad effect from eating papaya and mango (the fresh fruits) every day?
No idea: there is nothing that I can find in the literature that suggests any benefit, or any harm from using papaya enzyme after drinking wine. There is, in fact, a papaya-based wine available in some places. Perhaps someone thinks that the enzymes will better digest the alcohol in the wine, or settle the stomach, but I can find no information on this from usual medical sources. ...Read more
Etoh and papaya: Hello Od 433, as a general rule, you would be well advised NOT to mix alcohol with any medicine taken by mouth, so I would not mix them.
