Went to Gyno for a pap smear, ultrasound & STD tests. Everything came back negative. He said Im fine & blood is clear but he didnt test for syphilis?
Probably OK: STD testing often includes syphilis. But in some situations it doesn't matter. Except in special circumstances, syphilis is very rare in most heterosexuals in the US and other industrialized countries, especially at your age of 18. So most likely you aren't at risk. But if you think you're at risk or would like reassurance, it shouldn't be a big deal to be tested. Ask your doctor about it. ...Read more
STD screening: At age 18, pap smears aren't recommended. But yearly screening for chlamydia and gonorrhea is recommended until age 26. Once a woman reaches age 21, we do a pap smear along with the chlamydia and gonorrhea screening. Once a woman reaches age 30, we add high-risk HPV screening to her pap smear. ...Read more
It is possible that a pap smear be done with STD testing automatically or do you need to consent to STD tests specifically?
Two separate things: A pap smear is a screening test for cervical cancer. Getting tested for STDs involves sending separate tests. Doctors and patients often link these items together though so it is best to specifically ask what tests are being done and clarify what tests you would like or do not want. ...Read more

Can a gynecologist test you for STD without telling you, if you came in for routine yearly Pap smear? I am a self pay patient.
It could happen: Because almost everybody is supposed to get routine screenings for STD's, it becomes so "normal" to do it for almost all patients that it would be easy for a doctor or nurse to forget to mention that the tests are being done. For example, a nurse might count a patient's pulse without ever saying that she is counting the pulse. ...Read more
Can just a blood test detect all untreatable std's in women?I don't want my spouse's hymen torn by pap-smear like tests by inserting things into her v
Bad information: Congratulations on your impending marriage. And i'm sorry -- somebody has given you very bad information. Prior to marriage, a blood test for syphilis is all that we need. Nobody's going to culture her cervix without symptoms. This pathologist doesn't think a woman needs a pap smear until she becomes sexually active -- it's not the guideline but it makes sense. And what std is untreatable? ...Read more

I am 27 and i had a pap smear test and STD test.
I am HPV positive but the type is not included in 100 examined types.
is it dangerous?
Not usually: Usually the test only is positive in the more dangerous subtypes of virus. But to know exactly what virus it is and how extensive the dysplasia is requires further evaluation such as biopsy. The risk of dying or complications resulting in hysterectomy are very very low with appropriate follow-up..so please follow up promptly with your healthcare provider. ...Read more
Does a blood test for every disease other then just hiv and hep? Will it test for stds and so on? Or does a pap smear only show stds?
No: Lab tests are designed to test for 1 or 2 things each. Some are "test panels", and each item on the panel tests for 1 or 2 things. A doctor and his patient must first decide what things need to be tested for (they should have a good reason for doing each test). Then, those specific tests can be done, and the patient or her insurance company can pay for the tests (some are very expensive). ...Read more

Other things: While it is great to know that this is all okay, many other things can cause abnormal bleeding including cervical irritation, polyps, medications, and illnesses such as thyroid disease and diabetes. See your gynecologist and discuss the problem. A good history and physical exam can guide the diagnostic testing to give you an answer. Hope this helps. ...Read more
Not necessarily: A specific HIV test has to be ordered by the doctor. Usually the doctor will inform the patient (or ask permission) before doing an HIV test, so if there was no discussion about it, most likely the test wasn't done. OTOH, everyone tested for STDs should also be tested for HIV, but different doctors and clinics have different policies, however. Call the office and ask directly. ...Read more
How is HIV/Aids contacted? Does an STD test or pap smear test for it? What are the signs and symptoms?
No quick answer: Much too complex to answer here, especiallyin HealthTap's 400 character limit. By unprotected vaginal or anal sex, or intimate blood contact like sharing needles for drug use. It isn't diagnosed by routine STD or pap tests; a special HIV test is necessary. Symptoms too many to list, but often none at all until severe AIDS appears. Many online resources; start with CDC at http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/ ...Read more
What do they test for during an obgyn pelvic exam? Pap smear and then they swab for something? Do they check for non-std infections?
Some: The pap smear with ancillary testing is quite useful, not only in evaluating for cancerous and precancerous lesions, but there are also a variety of infections (both sexually and non-sexually transmitted) that can be identified in the pap smear (hpv, trich, herpes, bacterial vaginosis, candida, gonorrhea and chlamydia). However, not all infections can be seen in a pap smear. ...Read more

Cervicitis?: Spotting after sex often means inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis) or cervical ectopy, a common condition on birth control pills or other hormone contraception. It can be gonorrhea or chlamydia, but these would show up on standard STD tests. Sometimes a uterine problem. Keep working with your doctor; it should be possible to find an explanation and perhaps treatment, e.g. cervical cautery. ...Read more
