Pancreas (Definition)

Abdominal organ. It is digestive organ: it secretes enzymes into the small bowel which break down food and help its absorption. It is also an endocrine organ: it produces hormones involved in sugar control and control of digestion. Insulin is one of these hormones. Diabetics either lack Insulin (type 1 diabetes) or have inadequate ...Read more

Pancreatic enzymes: Yes pancreatic enzymes can affect stool testing results. The answer depends on the lab. Call the lab for their instructions,

If the pancreatic elastase test of my stool was in normal range- what exactly does this mean? Are my intestines functioning normally then?

If the pancreatic elastase test of my stool was in normal range- what exactly does this mean? Are my intestines functioning normally then?

It means you are OK: Pancreatic Elastase is an enzyme produced in the pancreas. Its purpose is to help digest food, specifically proteins.
It is not broken down during the trip from the pancreas to the stool.
If you have a normal pancreatic elastase, then it means that the digestive function of the pancreas (exocrine pancreas) is working well.
The endocrine pancreas makes insulin and this is not addressed by that test ...Read more

I had a stool test that included pancreatic elastase 1 test, it came back low at 102 vs 201 mcg/g normal. I have crohn's. Is this normally associated? How can this be tested further and treated?

I had a stool test that included pancreatic elastase 1 test, it came back low at 102 vs 201 mcg/g normal. I have crohn's. Is this normally associated? How can this be tested further and treated?

Pancreas: The test is meant to test for exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and, with that result, would mean that you have this. You need enzymes from the pancreas to properly digest food. The most common cause would be chronic pancreatitis and it is not related to crohn's. If I were you, I would ask my dr. Why this test was ordered, what the thought process was in ordering it, and what is next. ...Read more

Panc elastase test shows insufficiency. Have fatty liver. Is pei cause of fatty liver? Is there connection between fatty liver and pancreatic cancer?

No, just description: Like most dx, just a label for a pattern, as judged by whatever metrics. Yes, there is observed relation between fatty liver ; developing liver cancer. Fatty liver most commonly due to persistent low-fat, hi-carb (i.e. All sugars, simple ; complex) foods. Liver, to protect rest of body from ↑sugar (toxic), converts sugars into triglyceride fats. If can't export into external fat, then fatty liver. ...Read more

Which test is better for diagnosing pancreas insufficiency: stool panc elastase or serum lipase/amylase? Would either diagnose pancreatic cancer?

Which test is better for diagnosing pancreas insufficiency: stool panc elastase or serum lipase/amylase? Would either diagnose pancreatic cancer?

Both together: Neither of the tests alone tells much. A combination of tests and exams will lead to diagnosis. Pancreatic cancer is not able to be ruled out by any test or imaging study. It can only be absolutely proven by some form of biopsy. A ct guided needle or egd with brushing a may be the only way to find it. ...Read more

Had ULQ pains 7months. Ct, bile duct eus & Mrcp done 6 months apart all fine. Amalyase, faecal elastase fine. Rule out pancreas problem?

Yes: I would think that excludes pancreas problems. Left upper quadrant pain is usually related to stomach, spleen, or very commonly-difficulty with stool getting around the splenic flexure of the colon. Lookup "splenic flexure syndrome" on the internet ...Read more

130 fasting b/g at the time of c-peptide test. Results of c-peptide 3.4. Male, age 55, on insulin injections. Is my pancreas working at100%?

No: You still make insulin. However, in patients with type 2 diabetes, the amount of insulin/c-peptide made is insufficient for actual requirements. This is the reason for the high fasting blood sugar and represents pancreatic islet failure. As long as blood sugar is high, it doesn't matter how much c-peptide/insulin one makes as it still isn't enough to compensate for actual needs. ...Read more

If: If the tests were performed in a teaching hospital is is normal for doctors in training to have their work confirmed by the attending physician. If the tests are very specific in nature it is not unusual for an initial screening be done by a general physician to ensure the study is adequate then passed onto a specialist for a more detailed reading. The fact that two physicians are reading should be of concern, if fact I would be more comfortable knowing that more than one person is looking at the studies. ...Read more

How long does it take to get results from a test for pancreatic cancer?

If you are referring: To a blood test (ca 19-9), it is no way to check for pancreas cancer. It may be a "send out" and take a week or 2, but high, low or normal you may or may not have pancreas cancer, and should ot have had this test. Symptoms (pain, belching, stool color and pattern change and signs (weight loss, pain, new diabetes, jaundice) should lead to imaging, endoscopy and biopsy, then ca-19-9 if positive. ...Read more

At least a week: The results for pancreatic cancer can take a week or even longer. Most likely you had an ercp. You were sedated and they put a camera down you throat then did washings looking for cancer cells. The pathologist will look carefully and it may take time. Call your doctor to make sure the specimen is still pending. ...Read more

Stool paler than normal with mucus and white spots. Should I be worried? Had liver/pancreas blood tests done recently, normal results.

Stop worrying: If you feel generally well, are maintaining your weight, and can take part successfully in sports, then there's no reason to concern yourself with the vagaries of stool color and complexion. You describe some abdominal pain and you do need to find out whether this should be managed as functional bowel disease, or whether you have gallstones, or if there's any evidence it may be something else. ...Read more

Pancreatic cancer: Oncologist says CA19-9 blood tests are showing false negative (<37)results. How does he know for sure there is cancer?

Understanding labs: This isn't a "false negative" -- a great many pancreatic cancers simply don't make CA19-9. There may also be too little cancer left to make enough to be meaningful. This is just one of many examples of how limited tumor markers are. I trust the oncologist has his/her reasons for believing cancer is present. You'll need to ask. Best wishes. ...Read more

Which test can diagnose pancreatic necrosis?

Which test can diagnose pancreatic necrosis?

Imaging: Hi. The blood tests, amylase & lipase (two pancreatic digestive enzymes) can diagnose pancreatitis, but the best rests for pancreatic necrosis are probably imaging. Best imaging for p. necrosis would be CT with contrast. Abdominal MRI with contrast is also excellent, although not done as routinely. Transabdominal ultrasound doesn't see the pancreas super well, by transesophageal ultrasound is good ...Read more

How can I know if I have problems with my gallblader or pancreas? What tests should I do?

How can I know if I have problems with my gallblader or pancreas? What tests should I do?

Gallbladder/pancreas: Usually you start with a history and physical and many times a doctor can tell you whether or not one of these organs is affected. An ultrasound can show you gallstones or inflammation around the gallbladder. It wouldn't visualize the pancreas as well- a dedicated ct scan using pancreatic protocol would be better. You'd probably have lfts done as well as a lipase and/or amylase. ...Read more
