Wait: I would wait to see what is going on first. Ballet and taekwondo?? I don't know, you sound like your kind of young for a abdominal aortic aneurism??

Aorta (Definition)

The aorta is the largest artery in the body, leaving directly from the left ventricle of the heart to supply blood to the entire body. It is made of elastic tissue layers called "intima" and is subject to damage by high blood pressure, smoking, cholesterol, ...Read more

Went to doc for sinus infection. Abdominal exam revealed "palpable abdominal aorta" & now told to get ultrasound. But a bit young for possible AAA???

It is possible: To have an AAA but not likely it is prudent to be thorough with a palpable abdominal aorta. If you are very thin that is not unusual however if the Aortic palpation reveals an expansile aorta it is more worrisome

Is it a problem if you have a beating abdominal aorta?

Is it a problem if you have a beating abdominal aorta?

Aorta: Blood flows through the aorta as it is pumped around the body by the heart. If you don't have 'beating' or blood flow in the aorta, you have serious trouble. If the aorta gets stretched out and enlarged, that is a problem called aneurysm.

What to do if I have problem with beating abdominal aorta?

What to do if I have problem with beating abdominal aorta?

See you doctor: If you are thin, your abdominal aorta may be easy to feel. In most cases, this is benign. Have your doctor examine you to determine if you need any further imaging.

Are the walls of a 14mm abdominal aorta much thinner than a normal aorta?

Are the walls of a 14mm abdominal aorta much thinner than a normal aorta?

Normal: 14 mm is normal. Size usually does not alter wall thickness.

Is an abdominal aorta of 14 mm in diameter really small? I read that 2, 5 CM was normal?

Is an abdominal aorta of 14 mm in diameter really small? I read that 2, 5 CM was normal?

Not necessarily.: There is a significant difference is the average size of the female abdominal aorta versus the male aorta. The average size of the female is about 1.8-2.5 cm, and the average size of the male aorta is higher. If the distal vessels, going to the legs are of normal size and caliber, and the patient is female-there is no concern. If male, then a better look at the walls of the aorta, is needed.

Because my abdominal aorta is so small (14mm), does it have to stretch much more than a bigger one?

Because my abdominal aorta is so small (14mm), does it have to stretch much more than a bigger one?

Not necessarily: We don't know YOUR size - your aorta may be proportionate to your body surface area. Regardless, if you're perfusing your lower extremities sufficiently (easily determined by measuring the BP in your legs and comparing it to your arms), then the size or "stretch" is irrelevant.

If u have 14mm abdominal aorta the wall tension must be higher than if I had 25mm aorta? Because the wall thickness r not as great?

Reverse: " tension will directly proportion to the diameter " (physics La Place Law) So bigger the aneurysm greater the chances of rupture.

Small: That's smaller than average, but if your BP in your feet is normal, there's no indication for any intervention and no risk to you.

Pulsation on the abdominal aorta means what?

Pulsation on the abdominal aorta means what?

Depends: May be normal in a thinner or fit patient, or may indicate dilation of the aorta (aneurysm). An ultrasound will sort this out and is painless and easy.

The diameter of my abdominal aorta periodically ranges from 28 to 40 mm. What is the reason?

Aorta: Different parts of the aorta can vary but it would seem difficult to have the same part vary that much.

If you have 14mm abdominal aorta as a 23 yo, you will have thinner walls than if you had 2cm healthy aorta and so a weaker aorta. More prone to burst?

If you have 14mm abdominal aorta as a 23 yo, you will have thinner walls than if you had 2cm healthy aorta and so a weaker aorta. More prone to burst?

Just the opposite: Aortic aneurysms have a higher risk of rupture with increasing diameter. Generally they are treated expectantly with observation and antihypertensives if necessary until they become symptomatic (with pain or showering emboli distally), or enlarge greater than 5 cm. The two methods of fixing them are with a traditional operation or more recently, stent placement.

What is ectatic abdominal aorta?

What is ectatic abdominal aorta?

Bigger than normal: An ectatic abdominal aorta is one that is bigger than normal but not quite an aneurysm, which is defined as having a diameter that is 1.5X larger than that of a normal segment of aorta. A normal aorta for a man may be somewhere between 18-26 mm, though this is not hard and fast rule. There is general agreement that an aorta measuring 40 mm or greater would be considered an aneurysm, however.

Would a CT enterography be able to visualize the abdominal aorta?

Would a CT enterography be able to visualize the abdominal aorta?

Ct: CT angiogram is a the preferred method to visualize the aorta. Enterography is the visualization of the bowel. However if you are having a CT with IV and oral contrast this should take good look at aorta too?

If X-ray shows abdominal aorta (enlarged) does that mean plaque problem?

It might: Typically an enlarged aorta is due to an anuerysm. The anueysm may or may not contain cholesterol plaque. Aortic aneurysms are repaired once they reach a certain size due to the risk of rupture. People with aortic anuerysms should follow up routinely with a vascular specialist for ongoing management of the condition (cardiologist or vascular surgeon).

In x-ray findings, the Dr. Said that there were extensive artherosclerotic, changes in the visualized abdominal aorta. What does this mean?

Calcium: There is calcium in the wall of the aorta +/- iliac arteries. This is arteriosclerosis or "hardening" of the arteries. This may not need treatment. (other than not smoking, keeping BP and cholesterol under control). A vascular surgeon can tell you if additional testing or treatment is necessary.
