Lymph glands: Generalized enlargement of lymph nodes are seen in infectious mononucleosis, malignant blood dyscrasias and other infections. I'm not sure that they would be found on the rib cage itself or on the shin bone. I recommend an evaluation by a hematologist or an infectious disease specialist. A lymph node biopsy as well as other tests may be advised by the specialist. ...Read more

Lipoma: A lipoma is a slow-growing, fatty lump that's most often situated between your skin and the underlying muscle layer. Often a lipoma is easy to identify because it moves readily with slight finger pressure. It's doughy to touch and usually not tender. You may have more than one lipoma. Lipomas can occur at any age, but they're most often detected during middle age. A lipoma isn't cancer. ...Read more

Lump below rib cage in centre, feels hard, does not hurt. Feel when lying down on back. When I do a sit-up I don’t feel it.?

Could be a lipoma?: If it’s smooth and feels slippery it could be a common, non cancerous growth made of fat tissue. Your GP can feel this and confirm this and may have a picture taken (for example with an ultrasound) if there’s a question about what it is after feeling it. Sometimes if it’s very bothersome, it can be removed easily and rapidly. ...Read more

I have a small lump, maybe a little less than an inch long, on the left of my abdomen, next to my rib cage. It does not hurt. Should I be concerned?

How long?: If it has been there for long time it is probably benign such as q cyst or fatty tumor. If it is recent there are other possibilities which would require a minor biopsy for a definite diagnosis and treatment. ...Read more

Lump: Hard to tell exactly what it is without seeing or feeling it, but if it is well circumscribed, mobile, chances are it is a sebacious cyst - a cyst originated from an oil gland whose oil could not evacuate and built inside to form a cyst. It's benign but above certain pressure it may pop open and get infected. ...Read more

Lump: This may be the xiphoid process-a piece of cartilage at the lower end of the sternum (breast bone). This is normal and is usually in the midline and can protrude in the upper abdomen but in your case may be slightly to the left. To be sure, you'd need to have a physician examine you, however. ...Read more

Cause for 2 soft, immovable, painless lumps in abdomen; RUQ (3") and LUQ (4"), medial and directly inferior to the rib cage?

Depends: If just under the skin they are likely lipomas. Anytime you have a new mass it should be examined by a physician. In the place you described a lipoma is most common and is typically just below the skin level, but these are generally slightly mobil. ...Read more

I've found a soft lump on my back. It's approx 2 inches below and 2 inches across from my armpit. It's on my rib cage. It's also painless.

Lump: If the lump is on your back, I would think it is a cyst of some kind. If it is mobile (meaning you can move it side to side, up and down) and it's been there for a while unchanged, it sounds like a cyst, probably sebacious (oil gland clogged). I would see a doc to confirm it, though, and have peace of mind. ...Read more

Painless hard lump just below right lateral rib cage after moderate exercise, less prominent after resting. Cannot see from surface, have to palpate.

Lump: It is really hard to say without seeing it. The fact that it eases with relaxation may suggest some element of muscle spasm and information. Could be a benign fatty tumor such as a lipoma but nonetheless warrants an evaluation with your doctor ...Read more

Hard to say: If you have a soft tissue lesion anywhere that you have noticed, it bears observation. Lesions that are increasing in size, especially rapidly, or those associated with increasing pain, are concerns for malignancy. A painless mass which is constant in size, unchanging in appearance, and unchanged over time is likely benign. Lipomas are the most common soft tissue benign lesions; common and benign. ...Read more

Does this sound like hernia symptoms? Under my left rib cage at night it feels like something is sliding around and a lump is there also.

Could be: It could be a hernia. If the lump is there all the time then it may be something else. Hernia lumps tend to come out or be more pronounced when there is increased abdominal pressure like when straining to have a bowel movement or when coughing. Have your doctor check it to make sure of the cause of the lump. ...Read more

Small, hard, almost egg shaped lump under the skin on far right of back, just below rib cage. No pain. There a couple months. Any reason to worry?

Always worth a look: At 16, it would be extremely rare to have a "bad" mass like a cancer, but there can be things like sebaceous cysts, small abscesses, ingrown hairs, lipomas, and foreign body granulomas....So if it becomes painful or larger, gets reddish, or changes color, or if you have the time while you're off this summer from school, I would recommend that you have your family physician or dermatologist see it. ...Read more

Benign: This sounds like a benign growth if it's quite moveable and has not changed in size or appearance over a long period of observation. However it's best to have your physician examine this lump to be certain. He/she will let you know if a followup exam in the future is advisable. ...Read more
