I have a medium to small lump right above the left side of my ankle on my left leg. It is not painful at all. Any ideas of what it is?

I have a medium: It could be a cyst which is filled with fluid and can happen after an injury or almost jello type tissue if you have had it for a while or a lipoma, that consists of fatty tissue , both cause no problems. However, if the lump is getting bigger or is not going away, best to see a podiatrist or a surgeon , get an ultrasound and/or an MRI to find exactly what it is. ...Read more

See physician: Should get this looked at soon. Painless lumps are usually not infections or other simple problems. Was this a lump that changed or was there nothing there 5 days ago? Could be a muscle hernia if it disappears when you lie down. In general, all hard painless lumps should be checked out to be sure that they are not abnormal tissue. ...Read more

Needs evaluation : Soft tissue mass that's mobile and painless can be anything from a cyst, fibroma, lipoma, or hematoma. More concerning would be if it is increasing in size. If present for more than a month would have it evaluated ...Read more

Cyst?: It sounds like it could be what is commonly called a baker's cyst or popliteal cyst. A baker's cyst is a buildup of joint fluid (synovial fluid) that forms a cyst behind the knee. If it is small and painless, simple observation is sufficient. You should have your pcp or an orthopedic doc examine you to confirm. ...Read more

Large egg size/shape lump very deep inside my left upper inside leg/thigh. No pain, but feels like i can move it around. Fatty tumor or what? Remove?

Check it out: Most likely fatty tumor or fibrous tumor, less likely possibly femoral hernia. See a general surgeon. Sounds like nothing serious but in general if we can't get a tissue sample, we are not 100% sure of what it is. Don't lose sleep over it but get it checked out. ...Read more

Sensitive painful hard lump on my left leg just below my knee on the left side of my calf... Any ideas of what it could be?

Can be anything!: Hard painful lumps and bumps need to be evaluated by your PCP, or dermatologist for further evaluation. Depending if there's an additional red ring around it, or if it's nodular, or if it has any other associate findings will determine what it could be. So a physical examination needs to be done for definitive diagnosis. ...Read more

Sounds like next...: ...step may be either biopsy or further imaging like MRI/CTA. Could be something as benign as a lipoma (which are still not fun to have). Leg/knee weakness are probably a separate unrelated issue. Here's the deal with ultrasounds: they only image the *lower* leg vasculature. If you are still getting chronic LEFT leg swelling, it's time for pelvic vasculature imaging to r/o May-Thurner Syndrome. ...Read more

I get a painful lump in my left calf while getting up in the morning. It disappears almost immediately but some pain remains there. What is it?

Assuming: This isn't a muscle spasm that improves with stretching out, transient muscle herniation through the fascia that surrounds the muscle can occur. The muscle can then reduce through the fascial defect. Ultrasound can be useful in diagnosing these. ...Read more

Just discovered a painful, small lump near the bottom of my left calf. No ins. Need advice. Only painful when touched. Not visible. Ideas?

Cyst: If it is not visible, then most likely it's not inflammatory, because those are red, hot, swollen, itchy. Ganglion cysts (cysts located on the tendons) are by far the most common cause of otherwise not painful lumps unless touched. They are smooth surfaced, firm, mobile. They are benign and sometimes may disappear, although, at times may grown and cause even more pain due to compression. ...Read more
