See your doctor: This is something you need to be seen in person about. Gout is definitely a possibility, but there is a whole list of things this could be. I would elevate it, take some NSAIDs if you have no reason that you can't. Call your PCP to be seen today. you may need some X-rays and blood work done to see whats going on and also a referral to a rheumatologist or hand surgeon. ...Read more

Which thumb joint : there are three basic thumb joints. If this is at the bottom of the thumb, this is the carpometacarpal joint. It is commonly involved in osteoarthritis. And you may have had some irritation in the joint because of the severe pain. Think rheumatic dz: Definitely confusing! Nontraumatic IP joint swelling, especially in the thumb, brings to mind rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A common complication of RA is costochondritis which affects the rib joints (chest pain) & a variant called Caplan's Syndrome leads to lung nodules.
