Painful Swollen Thumb Joint
I have a swollen thumb at the joint and its very painful and a bit hot. There hasn't been any trauma to it. Any ideas what it could be please?

I woke up with a swollen, red, hot and very painful thumb joint! There was no trauma. How do I know if it is gout, infection or something different?? What tests should be done?
See your doctor: This is something you need to be seen in person about. Gout is definitely a possibility, but there is a whole list of things this could be. I would elevate it, take some NSAIDs if you have no reason that you can't. Which thumb joint : there are three basic thumb joints. If this is at the bottom of the thumb, this is the carpometacarpal joint. It is commonly involved in osteoarthritis. Think rheumatic dz: Definitely confusing! Nontraumatic IP joint swelling, especially in the thumb, brings to mind rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A common complication of RA is costochondritis which affects the rib joints (chest pain) & a variant called Caplan's Syndrome leads to lung nodules.
