Nodule: There are certain limitations imposed by this format which include the lack of a photograph of the skin lesions about which you requested information, So it's impossible to tell you the correct diagnosis and/or therapy, My Best advice would be to call and make an appointment with the dermatologist. I need to see the spot or spots and actually visualizing the lesions really makes all the difference. ...Read more

Derm consult: Since South Africa has the 2nd highest incidence of skin cancer in the world, I would recommend having a dermatologist evaluate any mole that is evolving. It may be nothing, or it may be a precancerous or a malignant change. It's worth having a specialist evaluate it! One of my mentors in residency told me to be very suspicious of any moles that appear or change after age 40, so please see a Dr! ...Read more

Are all rapid growing mole like bumps cancerous? Or can benign lumps grow very fast and turn out to be nothing?

Get evaluated prompt: It could run from something totally benign to a disaster. Have a dermatologist look at that as soon as possible. If he suspects malignant melanoma then it has to be cut out. Few weeks ago I shaved my head and cut my mole, now a lump next to the mole has developed and 2 large raised rashes have appeared underneath??
I've had a mole on my cheek as long as I can remember, but a few weeks ago it felt as tho a spot was directly under. It feels like a harder lump now.
Biopsy: A mole that is changing needs pathology examination of the biopsy. If the doctor thinks the mole is benign, he or she may excise part of the mole, all of the mole, or all of the mole plus some of the normal appearing tissue around it. If the mole appears cancerous, the doctor will usually remove the mole plus some surrounding tissue. Consider a plastic surgery consult. It is your face. ...Read more

I have a mole between my toes and wanted to know if part of a mole can fall off. It was raised and brown now the lump is flat and dark flesh colored.
Maybe, maybe not.: I suppose it could, but I'm more inclined to believe that the mole could be, in reality, a callus. It is not uncommon for them to be between the toes, mainly because of the potential for the toes to rub against each other. They can cause a small amount of bleeding which would make it look brown and raised. When it comes off, it would be flat and have darker color. To remove all doubt, see a doc. ...Read more

I have a mole on my back 7mm wide and it has a lump grown within the mole. My mum died of melanoma. Should I be worried?
Concerned, yes.: You should be concerned if you notice a change in a mole. Melanoma risk might not be directly inherited, but skin complexion is. Fair skin and sun exposure are strong risk factors. Melanoma is one of the most common cancers in younger adults. Since early melanoma is fairly easily diagnosed and eminently curable, don't waste time getting a professional opinion and biopsy diagnosis. ...Read more
