Night Moves..: It might be possible that you managed to traumatize you toe during your sleep. Not necessarily an acute, severely inflicted damage, but a more subtle low intensity type. Painful?

Drifting Toe.: Your description sounds like a consequence of a specific variant in "bunion" deformities. The drifting of the great toe, to the right, is being interfered with by the more stable second toe. This bumping together is causing an inflammatory pain. Most likely this is a result of genetics, foot type, shoes, socks and lifestyle. A foot specialist could offer some time tested treatment alternatives. ...Read more

The great toe is also shifting laterally or toward the little toe causing a subsequent hammering of the second toe. The stiffness is due to the excessive bone growth around the joint which not only causes pain but can also change the way you walk. I have a lump on my second toe on top of the uppermost knuckle no pain. Should I have it looked at?
