A lipoma may: Have a capsule so thin, or even absent, that the MRI can't pick it up. However, lipomas rarely demonstrate perceptible growth or pain, so if your lump is painful and enlarging, it might not be a lipoma.

I have a small painful lump on my ribcage. Been there for years and not changed. Should I be concerned?

Not really but.. ...: ....2 b sure it would b a good idea 2 have it evaluated by ur pcp on a non emergency basis. The fact that it has not changed in size usually means that it is not a malignant process, but the fact that it is painful warrants an eval.

I have this same lump on my back just below my ribcage on the right side and it is very painful especially while sitting down and when I stretch I can?

Skin or deeper?: If this is in your skin and not discolored. It is probably an oil gland cyst. Anything more than this requires a real physical doctor to observe and advise.

Next physical exam: Point this thing out to your physician. It's common to have a bump on one of the costochondral joints. They can grow funny when they're fusing. They mean nothing whatever. If it's been there for a long time, it's almost certainly nothing. But do show your physician.

Lumps: These small lumps may be lipomas which are benign fatty tissue growths and can be small and multiple. They are not usually tender unless they are irritated. A physician would have to examine you for accurate diagnosis, however.

Sebaceous cyst: Sebaceous cysts are very common problems. The occur when skin glands get obstructed and sebum builds up. They may get infected leading to redness pain and increasing size. You should see your doctor to have the cyst removed. Until then warm compresses and oral analgesics like acetaminophen and ibuprofen can help decrease the pain.

Lipoma: It sounds like you may be describing a benign lipoma which is a fatty tumor. Cysts of the skin or sebaceous cysts could be similar. Obviously, if it grows, becomes irritated, or tender you need to see a medical provider. Certainly if you are concerned and worry about constantly see someone now. Good luck
