It is odd: That nothing would show on the mri! was the MRI performed with and without contrast. Soft tissues are usually very well defined on an mri. Any type of mass or even swelling would normally show on the study. ...Read more

Is it possible? Yes: Does it sound like it? Not really. First off that's not really a joint area and gout usually affects joints.
