Lymphoma unlikely: Lymphomas are usually painless. Painful lump means some infection and you should talk to primary care doctor (pcp) and examined in pcp office. If needed, dermatology referral. Get it check: With skin red and lump in armpit, an infection is most likely. You should have someone look at it and see if it is an infection that needs antibiotics or simple drainage. Or something else. ...Read more

Lymphadenopathy: The doctor examining you is in the best position to make these decisions. Lymph nodes enlarge when they are doing what they are there for, fighting inflammation, and have some characteristics that can only be assessed by examining them.
