Doctor can examine: Bumps are hard to figure out without an exam. Sometimes, they appear and disappear for unknown reasons. Bumps may be ok if there is no pain, oozing, bleeding, itching, etc... Otherwise, the causes may be irritant or allergic (something touched the area), or may be from blocked pores, blocked glands, irritated follicles, etc... Lymph node.: Those sounds like post-auricular lymph nodes, which could enlarge in response to an ear or sinus infection. If they eventually go away completely, say in two to four weeks, then there's no cause for concern, especially if you have symptoms of said infections. If they do not go away, you may want to have them looked at - sometimes we need to take these out for definitive diagnosis if they linger. ...Read more

I Had Very Painful Small Bump in My Ear So I Asked My Bestfriend To Pop It. When She Popped It Got Worse Now The Whole Side Of My Face Aches?

May have infection: It is possible that popping the bump allowed the area to become infected. If the aching doesn't go away or if you have redness, warmth, or severe tenderness in the area, you should see a doctor to be evaluated for an infection. If the aching is mild and goes away within an hour or two of when the bump was popped, it is more likely just related to irritation from when she popped it. ...Read more

I ve a tiny bump behind end of one ear, [not painful but a bit tender, [ since 6 --8weeks], can this be tumour? Do I need an urgent scan now? Thanks

See below: It is likely to be an enlarged node due to some issue with your scalp. There is no urgent need for a scan. Watch the "bump": If it doubles in size, more bumps develop, the bump becomes painful, the bump ulcerates or bleeds, it would be time to see a doctor.

What could a painful bump inside the ear canal be? Ear feels clogged as well.

What could a painful bump inside the ear canal be? Ear feels clogged as well.

Otitis externa: Have you been swimming recently? It might be a swimmer's ear (otitis externa) which is a local skin infection of the ear canal. It could also just be a skin infection formed by clogged pore, kind of like a small abscess. I would apply a topical antibiotic like neosporin to the area 3x/day. If it is not improving then you should see the doctor. ...Read more

I have a red bump in my ear and it's painful and I've had it for a couple of days. I have my ears pierced. Should I be concerned?

Red bump in ears: A red bump might mean an abscess or infection. Rush to have this treated because if it involves the cartilage, this can spread and destroy the cartilage and you end up with a horribly deformed ear. This is an emergency if it involves the cartilage. Do not put heat on it. ...Read more

My friend has a raised hard bump behind her left ear at the top next to the hairline, its painful to touch and swollen.

Cyst: This is either a sebaceous cyst (epidermal inclusion cyst) or a trichilemmal cyst. There is a small chance of this being a lymph node, but if the overlying skin is red and it looks like it is coming to a head then it is the former. They are benign. Treatment when inflammed is a moist heat pack several times/ day and time. ...Read more

Small bump right above ear (in crook), painful to touch. Could it be a lymph node infection? How long should I wait to see if it goes away?

Post auricular LN: It is persists beyond the first few weeks of the year then have your family doctor or your local ent doctor check you. You may have lymph nodes elsewhere that you can not feel. Usually the doctor will give you an antibiotic to see if it does not resolve. If no change, then it will need to come out or get biopsied with a needle. I see these very often and they usually go away. Feel better! ...Read more

My daughter (9) has a bump on the right side of head behind her ear. It is solid but goes down sometimes. Not painful are all. Any idea?

Lymph node: Most likely it is a lymph node. A lymph node normally will increase in size during an infection somewhere in the general area of the lymph node. For example, an enlarged lymph node behind the ear is frequently caused by an infection somewhere on the scalp (like ringworm) or by irritated or flaky skin (like seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff). If it gets painful, or red or grows, see doc. ...Read more

Ear is painful, sore, irritating and itchy. Looks like a small bump inside my ear, just discovered the bump tonight, had symptoms for a week.

This sounds: Most like an infected sebaceous cyst; you can call it a pimple if you want. It is actually pretty common and results from dead skin cells and oils getting infected. You might try some OTC polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) ointment for a day or two, but if it doesn't improve quickly see your doctor for prescription antibiotics, either topical or oral. Don't squeeze it/prick it! ...Read more

I have a hard pimple (no colour) on my outer ear near my ear canal. The first days it was painful now it's not. I have it for a week. Should I worry?

Don't worry: It sounds like you have a small cyst. Do no worry but try applying some warm compresses to it. Put warm water on a washcloth and hold it to your ear a couple times a day. It should resolve on its own in a week or two. If it does not, or if it enlarges see your doctor for further evaluation. ...Read more
