Depends: It depends on what your dr is concerned about. CT scans do provide significant radiation exposure. Some causes of left upper abdominal pain can e assessed by ultrasound or endoscopy, depending on your other symptoms and risks. Not entirely clear: Good news is there are no significant organs in the left upper abdomen- (e.g. gallbladder or appendix). The relationship to bowel movements raises the question of irritable bowel or constipation. I would suggest being sure you're using adequate fiber in your diet, drinking plenty of water and adding a probiotic (yogurt or pill).
