Musculoskeletal?: Fleeting sharp chest pain lasting only seconds, worsened by movement is usually musculoskeletal in nature. For ex: a young man who does upper body weight lifting may strain his pectoralis muscle, causing fleeting sharp pain. See doc if pain is associated w/shortness of breath, or palpitations, lasts longer than a few minutes, or increases in frequency or intensity, or does not resolve. ...Read more

Muscle (Definition)

It is a body tissue that has the ability to contract. It shortens and generates force. It relaxes and returns to its original length. Muscles move joints, stabilize the body, move air and food through the organs, act as valves for bladder, bowel and other organs. They control movement of the eyes. They help us express ourselves by changing the shape of our ...Read more

Doctor can evaluate: A primary care doctor or a doctor in the E.R. Can evaluate to see if there is a problem with the pectoralis muscle, the ribs/cartilage of the chest, the heart and it's large vessels such as the aorta, the lungs, the esophagus, etc... A chest x-ray can be done to look at the heart and lungs. Further testing is available, if needed. ...Read more

What is a pain in left scapulae that runs under left armpit and to left pectoral muscle caused from?

Seratus anterior : 40's male has pain in "armpit to pectoralis", and he queries as to cause. The serratus anterior muscle is implicated ; pushing his arm forward against resistance would be expected to arouse pain. Pushing and weight lifting stressors might be expected to cause this type of muscle injury ; reflexive muscle spasm. Rest and heat might benefit. If persists see an osteopath or a physiatrist. ...Read more

Get help in person: As a general rule, i instruct my patient that if they ever think it is possible they are having a heart attack, then it is possible they are having a heart attack and should be evaluated as if they are. You have lots of medical problems, and certainly women (and diabetics) can have pain that is different from the "classic" description. I suggest you go to the er or see your doc asap. ...Read more

The past week i've been having sharp pains in my uppermiddle left pectoral muscle. It seems to only have the sharp pains when it is fully stretched

Injury to fibers: Sounds like an injury to a select group of muscle fibers in the pectoral muscle (which is very broad and has many different fibers that are used more or less depending on the specific action you are performing). Strain or tear would be treated with anti-inflammatories and rest. If symptoms persist or are associated with a mass or other finding, you should see a doctor. Hope this helps! ...Read more

When I move my left shoulder, my left pectoral muscle hurts. Is it probably okay for me wait and see what happens?

When I move my left shoulder, my left pectoral muscle hurts. Is it probably okay for me wait and see what happens?

Yes, probably OK: Pain in your pectoralis muscle with shoulder motion is most likely from a strain from recent overuse of that muscle ( lifting, bench press, chest flies, etc.). Mild strains should resolve spontaneously with time for rest and muscle recuperation. The pain should generally reduce gradually but steadily in a couple days. Once full painfree motion returns, it is safe to resume normal activities. ...Read more
