Sharp, stabbing chest pain in the left side of my chest. Noticed when laying on my right side. Worsens when breathing in. What could this be?
Yes: I just don't know how sharp chest pains could ever be considered "good" (!), but it's unlikely to be your heart. The lining of the lung has the pain sensation but the lung itself does not have pain nerve. Pain w/ deep breath: May be a muscle "stitch" that can be relieved by stretching the affected muscle group. Might also be inflammation of joint where rib bone & cartilage meet (costochondritis) which may respond to NSAID (advil/motrin/aleve). Cracked rib also possible. Costochondritis: Your pain is likely due to inflammation of the rib cage. If it is worse with deep on deep inhalation, this is likely. You can try an antiinflammatory like Motrin or naprosyn (naproxen). It takes a few days to improve. Go to Emergency.: You need to go to ED. you are describing a chest pain with musculoskeletal or pleuratic features. Given the combo of left leg pain with this Chest pain I'm worried that is a clot. It could be a coincident to have both but i think this could be serious and you need to go to the ED. Especially if you have leg swelling or redness or you smoke or obese or takes contraceptive or have family hx of clot. ...Read more

Maybe nothing but...: Shelley, The fact that it is positional (and not worse with exertion) would indicate more of a muscular condition. That being said, you have two major risk factors for cardiac disease (you smoke and are overweight). If you have high blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history, that would add to your risk.
