Fell this morning while running. Mild pain in wrist/thumb area. Can move fingers and wrist freely. Little swelling. Do I need an x-ray?

A good idea: Many minor wrist sprains can lead 2 a fracture of the navicular. Many times it will b more evident on an orthopedic exam, then x-rays may or not b done. True early images of occult navicular fractures r not positive, but if an orthopedic surgeon feels strongly about the findings a cast 4 +/- 2 wks. And then new images with the cast off will show the fx. Due 2 bone absorption in the perifracture erea. ...Read more

What is wrong with my wrist? I have been having trouble with my wrist for about 2 years. There is a sharp pain shooting from the middle of my wrist to my index finger and mainly my thumb.

First: First off, I want to tell you that I cannot diagnose your wrist problem. Your symptoms might be consistent with carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve gets compressed at the wrist. Symptoms can include pain, numbness, or tingling in the palm, wrist, thumb, or fingers. The thumb can become weak. Possible causes can include making repetitive wrist movements (like typing for a living), obesity, pregnancy, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. Yesterday, I couldn't bend my thumb and today, every time I move my wrist too much, I get sharp pains where my thumb bone meets my index finger bone.

Yesterday, I couldn't bend my thumb and today, every time I move my wrist too much, I get sharp pains where my thumb bone meets my index finger bone.

Thumb pain: A couple of thoughts... It could be an overuse injury, a tendonitis, it could be a flare up of arthritis caused by a previous injury. In these situations, I usually try to first rest the hand - no trying to "test" it to see if it hurts, or do any lifting or repetitive motions. I take Ibuprofen and see how it goes over a day or two. If it's improving on it's own great, if not, I see my doc! ...Read more
