Pain In Upper Left Rib Cage Area
I suddenly started to feel a dull throbbing pain around my upper left rib cage area. Its really painful when I move my arms or change positions in bed?
Trauma?: Were you injured? Have you been lifting heavy objects or doing strenuous work? Your symptoms suggest a muscle strain or pull. Possibly even a bruised or broken rib, if you were injured. An x-ray would help. Rest, heat, Ibuprofen or Naproxen (or even full dose aspirin) would likely help but time is the most important factor.
Many possibilities: This could be from something irritating the diaphragm from above or below, from the rib or the costochondral attachments, an enlarged and tender intraabdominal organ like the spleen, or could be referred pain from elsewhere. Answering your question accurately would require a full exam. Good luck.See 1 more doctor answer

Rib cage: Rib cage pain is usually produced by some. Blunt trauma producing rib fracture or tearing of the intercostal muscles between the ribs. There: There can be a "floating rib", in some patients, in which the bottom rib is more mobile. If you are pushing on the rib then this is possible. There are intestines in that area also that can feel mobile. If a patient had pain, shortness of breath, vomiting, or fever, then this should be evaluated by their doctor, but without these symptoms then a serious cause is less likely.
