Pain In The Upper Left Side Of Abdomen
Hi. I have a pinching pain in my upper left side of abdomen. It seems to be coming from just under the ribs. I have diverticulitis and IBS. IBS?
Nonspecific: There is no specific diagnosis to left upper quadrant abdominal pain. Sometimes I have seen muscle spasms here, associated with intermittent pain and a "bulge". This can be confused for a hernia, but the bulge is the firm muscle that's in spasm. You'll have to see your doctor for a more complete evaluation if you need more info. Hope this helps! Read more
Jaundice: You are describing pain in the area of the liver plus jaundice from a sick liver. You most likely have liver disease - infectious, chronic, etc. You should see a GI specialist with an interest in liver disease (hepatologist). You may also be infectious and might need to isolate yourself in some way to avoid spreading infectious hepatitis. Get evaluated right away. Read more
Consider Cold Milk: If you aren't a smoker, who is overweight, and family history of heart disease, that is, it isn't your heart that is causing this, consider your stomach as being the culprit. Too much acid? How about drinking milk to coat it with cold milk. Not a treatment, but will give you diagnosis. Then go to your doctor. You are going to need their help. See the surgeon: When you have had recent surgery, a new pain in the same area has to be considered to be related to the surgery until shown not to be. Sometimes, post-operative adhesions can do this; sometimes swelling or fluid in the area of the surgery. In any case, you need to see the surgeon who did the procedure so that he/she can evaluate the problem and treat it properly. Read more
LUQ anatomy: Anatomically, the left upper quadrant (luq) of abdomen includes: spleen, pancreatic tail, stomach, descending duodenum, splenic flexure of the colon, associated vessels. Don't forget the diaphragm, heart, and lower chest are pretty close by. The abdominal musculature, ribs, and skin can all contribute as well to localizing luq pain. I wish we could help: You with that unique description, but, alas, only an exam and evaluation can sort this out. The stomach and spleen are in the upper left abdomen; pain from one of those typically doesn't radiate. Perhaps it is coming from something associated with the large bowel and it turns the corner and travels down to the rectum. A complete history and exam by a skilled Doc is what you need. Stay well:) Read more
