Pain in interphalangeal joint of big toe a few weeks but playing soccer last night the pain has increased significantly. Hurts to walk on it. Help?
Stop playing :
Soccer and see a podiatrist for x-rays. It is possible it is something like a capsulitis or synovitis of the capsule that envelopes the toe joint. (think sprain). A fracture should also be ruled out. Inflammation of the extensor hallucis longus tendon is another concern.
You need to stop playing until this is healed.
The toe should likely be wrapped until you can see the doctor to prevent motion. ...Read more

What is moderate pain and swelling in the joint of my big toe where it joins my foot. I'm 43 and very physically active.?
Overuse...: First thing that comes to mind when you say big toe joint and pain is gout. However, usually the pain is pretty severe, and it's red/inflamed. Very active people can have minor sprains and strains in the great toe that causes inflammation and pain, especially if there is some underlying arthritis that gets flares up. I would start with ibuprofen/rest and if not better in few days see doc. ...Read more
Stop the walk talk.: Walked for a long time, I assume means, recently walked. You have over stress the toe, The tissues around the toe have been injured and now need time to recover. The pain is probably temporary and will go away with rest and time. I doubt that it is injured to the point of fracturing, but an x-ray might be appropriate, if there is swelling associated with the pain. ...Read more

Arthritis: Actually it could be a number of different things but if it has all of a sudden become red, hot, swollen, and painful it may be gout. If it has been developing over many years then it is likely something called "hallux limitus" or "hallux rigidus" which is basically an arthritic process of the big toe joint that over time causes limitation of motion. I would recommend seeing a podiatrist. ...Read more
Fungal infection: Perhaps this is a fungal infection of the toes. Is the itching worse after wearing socks & shoes for several hours? Is it worse at the end of the day (assuming you work daytime hours)? Any redness, irritation, peeling skin? It doesn't have to have a foul odor. If yes to most of these questions, consider a fungal infection. Try some otc remedies first. If no improvement, see a podiatrist. ...Read more
The joint under my big toe and my big toe hurt all the time, what can I do to address this problem?
Get at the cause: See your doctor for an evaluation. X-rays and/or lab tests may be necessary to diagnose what exactly is going on. It sounds like arthritis, and there are many different types of arthritis. If it is at the base of the joint, and there is bump on the side, it could be a bunion. See your doctor for a more specific answer. ...Read more
Technically : The big toe joint would be the interphalangeal joint not the mpj, but, I'm not sure which you are referring to. If the ip joint, I'd look to see if the toe was straight or not. If not internal compressive forces may be irritating the joint. If mpj is bothering you look for dorsal spurring to be a cause, I.e hallux limitus. Gout also affects this joint. ...Read more

I have pain in top of big toe joint. Feels like something small is floating around above joint. Been over a year. Heavy activity makes it worse. Ideas?
Big Toe Pain: Good morning. If there is a history of trauma, their is a higher incidence of early arthritic conditions such as Hallux Limitus that cause bone spurs to form in the big toe joint, limit motion, cause "bumps" to occur over the joint, and cause more pain with activity. An x-ray would be taken to evaluate the joint and surrounding bony structures. ...Read more
