Not entirely clear: good news is there are no significant organs in the left upper abdomen-( e.g. gallbladder or appendix). The relationship to bowel movements raises the question of irritable bowel or constipation. I would suggest being sure you're using adequate fiber in your diet, drinking plenty of water and adding a probiotic ( yogurt or pill). If the pain worsens or you have new symptoms or fever see a doctor! ...Read more

Check with your doc: If this is newly developing, there sometimes may be fluid collection around the liver after the surgery. There are different things that can lead to this, so difficult to tell you simply hear. But the sensory nerves for that part of the body refer pain to the right shoulder - so the right shoulder pain has to do with the area around the liver. How long?: Pain is normal in the first 1-2 weeks after surgery. But it should be getting better each day. If getting worse or associated with fevers, vomiting etc see your surgeon. If not, and Gerri g slightly better everyday you are probably ok. Add ibuprofen to your pain mess for additional pain control. Etoh pain: Sounds suspicious for peptic ulcers. I would start with avoiding alcohol. Empiric treatment for ulcers might be a good way to start. If it persists, yoi may need an endoscopy or further trsting. ...Read more
