Not entirely clear: good news is there are no significant organs in the left upper abdomen-( e.g. gallbladder or appendix). The relationship to bowel movements raises the question of irritable bowel or constipation. I would suggest being sure you're using adequate fiber in your diet, drinking plenty of water and adding a probiotic ( yogurt or pill). How long?: Pain is normal in the first 1-2 weeks after surgery. But it should be getting better each day. If getting worse or associated with fevers, vomiting etc see your surgeon. Depends : On quality and character of pain. I suspect this was for diverticulitis perforation with colostomy and then takedown? You could have same thing happen again if the pain is constant, sharp and steady esp with fever or chills. Other possibility would be constipation or adhesion.
