Severe pain under left shoulder blade & numbness down left arm till fingers. Tingly feeling in elbow. Neck is fine. Weakness in left arm. Supraspinatus?

Need exam: Your symptoms suggest cubital tunnel syndrome (ulnar nerve entrapment @ elbow) but a thorough history and physical exam is required to confirm. Supraspinatus (rotator cuff) injuries can occasionally present as you describe but this would be unusual. Most RC strains or tears cause pain w/ overhead activities, difficulty sleeping on the affected shoulder and/ or weakness... Best of Luck! ...Read more

Bad habit of sleeping on arm. Causing shoulder pain, arm numbness, upper chest / collar bone tenderness. Neuropathy? What to do during sleep? Also pt?

Sleeping on your arm: Puts a great deal of pressure on your rotator cuff and drives the cuff up into your shoulder blade and collarbone. It is akin to someone clamping you thigh for eight hours it is going to hurt. Furthermore your ac joint also can become inflamed. Finally the nerves in you arm get stretched and irritated. Try sleeping in a recliner, wear a shoulder immobilizer, or sleep with your back supported. ...Read more

I have left shoulder pain that is down to shoulder blade & is now causing arm pain everyday. What can I do or what could cause this?

Pinched nerve?: There are many things that can present this way. Part of the differential is a cervical radiculopathy or radiculitis (this is when nerves in your neck become pinched or irritated). If your symptoms persist or worsen (such as weakness), seek medical attention. Commonly (if this is what you do have.), a trial of physical therapy is very successful, but occasionally, surgery may be needed. ...Read more

Muscular Pain?: Hi, your recent onset of symptoms and your age suggest that at this point the most likely diagnosis is that you have a shoulder/upper back/neck strain. You don't describe radicular symptoms that would suggest a neurologic etiology. Initial treatment after an H&P and imaging usually starts with NSAIDs and maybe a muscle relaxer and also some therapy exercises to see if your symptoms will get better ...Read more

Pinched nerve: Because patients having cardiac problems can have these symptoms, you should have this ruled out. But the most common cause is an irritation of a nerve in the neck by a bone spur or herniation that can cause pain or numbness that runs down the arm into the hand. An MRI can usually show the cause of the problem if it does not resolve. Thank you for the question. ...Read more

Sharp pain in my left shoulder blade. Neck pain radiates behind my ear. Shoulder pain and soreness. And little arm soreness as well. Pinched nerve?

Discuss with MD: You have a lot going on for your age, please discuss this with your doctor, you may warrant some further testing. This is not a good forum for this question as we can not diagnose "pinched nerve" without examination and testing. Your doctor may order a nerve conduction test coupled with an emg, or an MRI if they have not done so already. Discuss with your doctor. ...Read more

Arguably: Arguably the worst possible cause of severe pain felt in the shoulder blade and deep into the chest would be an uncommon condition called aortic dissection. Problems with the gallbladder and heart can also cause pain in the region of the shoulder or armpit (axilla). The spinal nerve corresponding to t2 also feels an area that involves the armpits and hoop-shaped strip of skin that runs across your chest above your nipples, through your armpits, and across your back at about the same level (it also involves part of the skin on the arm). After excluding things like dissection, heart problems, and gallbladder problems, a neurosurgeon may be helpful to get to a diagnosis and some relief. ...Read more
