Left hip pain at night and after sitting down after work. Pain in hip and shoots down leg at times. Worse at night in bed. No injury as far as I know.
Left hip pain: May be scaitica. Sitting is stress on spine. Consider ergonomic chair with lumbar support. At work change position ( i.e. get up for a moment every 45 minutes to an hour) to shake out, Consider a trial of NSAIDS ( motrin/alelve ) and muscle relaxant( if not allergic). Maybe cramps....: I agree with your primary dr.'s answer, but two things also need be considered. Phlebitis is more active at night because of dehydration and immbolity. Arthritis/Baker cyst: Multiple causes of posterior (back of) knee pain exist but the most likely causes in a 60+ year old are degenerative diseases: osteoarthritis, baker cyst, and/or 'degenerating cartilage and ligaments' . An xray or MRI may distinguish the causes. Also other possible diagnoses are gout and rheumatioid arthritis (which can be confirmed on simple labs). Need an evaluation: In a female runner, I often say that hip pain is a stress fracture until proven otherwise. Thus, you need a specialist evaluation. Other possibilities include a labral tear in the hip joint, hip flexor/gluteus medius or minimus tendonitis, bursitis, etc. Referred pain from the S-I joint or the lumbar spine are possibilities. Leg neuralgia: Not all pins and neesles in the legs are due to pinched nerves in the back, especially when symmetrical (both legs). Your descriptive sounds more like a peripheral neuropathy, due to damage to or inflammation of nerves. Need to look for diabetes, low thyroid or nerve disorders. Your doctor will recommend you have nerve conduction studies (NCS) by neurology and probably a CT of the lumbar spine. ...Read more
