Dad, 80, had pain in shaft of penis for 2 days last week. U-logist did culture - significant growth of ecoli colony count > 10-4 CFU/ML. Taking Nitrofurantoin for 3 months. Shaft pain gone. Pain in penis tip since 2 days. No other smypts. Serious?
Needs new antibiotic: Since this developed while on nitrofurantoin, probably the E. coli is resistant to it. Also, this is not a particularly strong antibiotic and does penetrate some tissues very well, especially the prostate, a common focus of UTI in older men. He probably needs another one, e.g. a fluorquinolne like cipro or related drug. Discuss w/ doctor, or maybe infectious disease specialist. Good luck! ...Read more
Can dehydration cause ramdom pain/itch shaft of penis? No UTI/STD. Pain off and on for year. Ultrasound clean. Pain sometimes radiates to left foot?
Not an STD: Dehydration would not do this. STDs must be on your mind, by your topic tags. But it doesn't sound like any STD. Intermittent symptoms ("random", "off and on") often are psychological. Most penile skin problems are standard dermatology problems that can occur anywhere but happen to involve the penis. But best to see a doctor at a time you're having symptoms; better safe than sorry. Good luck! ...Read more

Two small hard bump on shaft of penis since last week, still there. I had softer bumps at exact same place before but went away in a day. What to do?
More info needed: It's difficult to judge potential causes from this description. If the "bumps" are superficial, genital warts might be the best bet; or just skin tags. If they seem to be coming up from deeper in the skin, maybe just skin cysts or pimples. Only way to know for sure is to see a doctor or clinic. If there is a national health genitourinary medicine clinic near you, that would be a good choice. ...Read more

Need to be seen!: Best thing to do is to have it checked by a dermatologist. If the small bumps are dome shaped with a central dimple, it could be molluscum contagiosum. This is a skin rash caused by a viral infection that can spread by sexual contact. Early lesions on the genitalia may be mistaken for herpes or warts but, unlike herpes, these lesions are painless. Have it checked and diagnosed. Hope this helps. ...Read more

Nondiagnostic: This is a nondiagnostic symptom but possible causes include prostate or urethral inflammation. Lack of urinary symptoms make these unlikely, however.
