I've had a cough for a few days followed by sore throat a fever and pain in ribs when coughing and breathing. What could this be?

See your doc today: Sounds like you're sick! You need to get seen. You might have strep throat and that needs to be treated with antibiotics to prevent long-term complications. Take tylenol (acetaminophen) only as directed on bottle for now, try some chloraseptic or cepastat lozenges, drink liquids and get seen later today. Good luck! ...Read more

When my daughter sleeps, her breathing is fast and she has a high fever. Should I take her to the hospital?

Measure temperature: Determine what the temperature is. If her body feels warm
but not the forehead you feel with the back of your hand and
measured then it is not fever. Infants breathe faster than adults.
If truly a fever and labored breathing then it is best to have her
evaluated ...Read more

I am battling chest congestion, annoying cough, high fever with body aches and chills. What could it be?

If that's impractical--it is Christmas eve--I'm sure one of our Health Tap doctors would be happy to do a virtual consult with you. A full audiovisual consult is a better choice than a text only consult in a case like this. Sorry you're feeling so bad. —( ...Read more

What would cause reoccuring sickness in child: high fever, nasal/chest cong. Seems to come on about every 6wks. Neg for strep/flu. Seasonal allergies?

Not allergies: Allergies would not cause fever. I would want to know the following: how old is the child? How long has this been going on? Any other lab work, specifically a blood count? Any other symptoms, such as swollen glands, sores in the mouth, rashes, joint swelling? How high is the fever? Recurrent fevers of unknown origin are sometimes referred to pediatric infectious disease specialists. ...Read more

My 2 year old just had a chest xray and was diagnosed with bronchitis. He has no cough or other symptoms other than high fever. Does this make sense?

Easy over read: Radiologists often make a suggested diagnosis based on assumptions. You only order chest xrays if you suspect a chest finding. If the xray is taken before the kid takes a deep breath, it will look like bronchitis. The suggested label from the radiologist is just that, a suggestion, they also say this needs to have clinical correlation. The doc may have just used the label to finish the visit ...Read more

I have EDS3/chronic back pain, for 3 days I've had worsening upper back and rib pain with a fever and can't raise my arms or bend/walk properly?

To The ER With You!: Whether you have EDS3, your fever and inability to raise your arms is very concerning. 20 month old had high fever of 40. Got it down and she is sleeping. It is now back up to 38. Should I wake her for meds or let her sleep?

Let her sleep: Fever is a natural body response to illness that increases the heart rate & movement of white cells & antibodies that fight illness. Sleep is a natural response to the need for the additional work. I NEVER wake a sleeping child for fever meds. If they are awake & it is dose time, I may or may not give it bases on their level of comfort. ...Read more
