Doctor insights on:
Pain In Outer Left Arm
Need many more facts: There are way too many possible reasons to go into now. Clearly more history is needed. Ideally a doctor would want to perform a history and physical exam before making a diagnosis.See 5 more doctor answers
To the Doctor: Not one of those symptoms that you need to be google searching for the answer on your computer. Your age and gender put you on the side of being safe about this one. See your doctor. If this occurred with or after any exertion I would be particularly concerned.
Persistent arm pain: If there is no history of trauma (ie a fall or twisting injury) then persistent single sided arm pain could have several causes. Is the pain worse at night? Worse on movement or at rest? There could be many different causes but without a proper examination and a history taken it is difficult to give you a proper answer. I agree with the other answers to seek advice from a doctor.See 2 more doctor answers
Left arm symptoms: These symptoms could reflect a focal stroke! - but this seems highly unlikely, given your age. A second possibility is that you rested on your nerve bundle that runs down the inner tricep region, next to your humerus. This area when compressed makes our arm seem "asleep". A third possibility is a cervical spine nerve root compression. A fourth possibility is an axillary compression of nerves.See 2 more doctor answers
Needs to be checked: If you can not extend your left arm, you should consult your doctor or an orthopedic doctor. It may be due to muscle breakdown, Tennis Elbow or other neuro muscular disorders. Get it checked
How about stopping?: There is an old joke - "Doc, it hurts when I do this." "Don't do that!! " Smoking causes intense constriction of arteries, more so in some very susceptible people, and you could be experiencing angina or heart pain. If it is only when you smoke cigarettes, I would be very concerned and see your doctor immediately for more complete evaluation. AND STOP SMOKING!! Get into a cessation program asap.See 1 more doctor answer
Not enough info.: This can't be diagnosed with the information that is available. A history, physical examination & other studies may be needed to determine cause/causes.
Muscle strain: You may have injured a muscle or strained one. When you put on a shirt you have to twist the arm and in the process if there is an injured muscle it will hurt. If it doesn't get better see your doctor. Maybe you can remember doing something to injure the arm or to strain it.
"left arm pain": The complaint "left arm pain" can be do to many conditions. Could come from the brain, spine, nerves, blood vessels, aorta, heart, muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, etc. Your doctor will allow you to provide more information & examine you so he or she can a diagnosis and then provide treatment.
Don't worry: Just make an appointment with your doctor. Many possible things may be the cause of strange arm pain at night.
Get evaluated: Can you feel anything unusual in your armpit? There are lymph nodes there that drain the arm and front of the chest. Get seen and tell them your symptoms.
You need evaluation: To find the cause. Pain in the arms can be an indicator of cardiac problems, or can be something in the lungs or soft tissues of the shoulders, or even things in the abdomen like the gall bladder and other organs. Your doctor must make a diagnosis before anybody can suggest what to do. However, stopping smoking would be the obvious first step, and I strongly encourage you to do so. Get help!
