Pain In Middle Of Chest When Coughing
I feel pain in middle/upper back and chest when coughing, taking deep breath. No flue symptoms.
What could it be?
Can be based on lung problem or simply INTERCOSTAL MUSCE Pull (The small muscles in between the ribs)
A chest x-ray is in order and you should see your Primary Care Provider for the results of that film and appropriate treatment!
Hope this helps!

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Hi I am indian. Is chest pain common during coughing and can the color of the cough tell a lot of things about your condition?
Yes: Pain with vigorous coughing is common and due muscular strain. Pleurisy can mimic this but is also present with just breathing. Clear, white, or yellow phlegm is generally normal. Red suggests bleeding. Green is suspicious for infection. Only lab testing on the sputum can provide more exact information. If you smoke, please stop! If you don't: you're smart! ...Read more
I had all the symptoms of a cold yesterday. Today I woke up with a terribly painful cough (chest pain). Should i be going in to class?
Probably.....: If you have no fever, you likely have acute bronchitis due to a viral infection. Coughing into your elbow will help prevent spread of infection while the bronchitis runs its course in about 7-10 days. Another possible etiology is bronchospasm. If your cough is not improving, or if you develop shortness of breath, see your doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Smoking cessation is also needed. ...Read more
Possibilities...: If the left chest pain increases with cough and deep breathing, then it is likely related to the other symptoms. If this is the case, the likely diagnoses are bronchitis vs pneumonia. Often, the only way to tell the difference is via chest x-ray. If the left chest pain does not increase w/ above maneuvers, see a doctor today so cardiac etiology can be ruled out. Go to er if needed. ...Read more

Most of the non-narcotic forms use antihistamines or affect the cough receptors themselves (ie benzonoate). Infection: A good rule of thumb is that if an upper or lower respiratory infection persists beyond approximately 10 days, it likely has become a bacterial infection. You likely have a lower respiratory infection and need to see your doctor. Antibiotics probably would be helpful.
