Could be CTS: It sounds like it could be carpal tunnel syndrome (cts)which is a type of nerve compression, but this will often affect other fingers rather than just the thumb. Is it on the lateral or outside of the thumb? It could be a tenosynovitis as well. If you look up a test called a finklestein test, you can check yourself and see if its that. Left wrist pain (quite intense) is brief and comes and goes fairly regularly - goes away in about 5 seconds. Scared it's a heart attack!

QUITE UNLIKELY: but if you are concerned, if you are middle aged and have risk factors it wouldn't hurt to get a baseline electrocardiogram and have an exam to get an idea what IS likely. ...Read more

Arthritis or break: There are 3 bones in your thumb: two in the digit and one in the hand. Pain where the digit meets the hand could be in the joint (arthritis) or one of the thumb's tendons. Pain at the point where the bone in the hand meets the wrist could be a wrist fracture. These are sometimes missed on initial x-rays after an injury.
