L5-S1 microdiscectomy Fri for left leg sciatic pain. Calf/foot pain relief w/some thigh/behind knee pain. Pain less AM but sharp pain down left leg into foot w/pain level of 9.5 & hurts sitting/lying.

Microdiskectomy: Give it some time; sometimes simply moving the roots around can upset the lumbar plexus and give you intermittent (even quite severe) pain, although it resolves within a week or two. Getting to the disk requires mobilization of the roots and inflammatory changes from that- or the disk herniation- itself can give this pain. As long as bowel and bladder OK, hopefully this will resolve also. Best! ...Read more

Foraminal stenosis at l5-s1 but emg is normal. Massive pain on left leg, between buttocks and foot. Why emg shows normal?

Radiculitis: Good question. An EMG shows if there is essentially nerve damage to the extent that the nerve is starting to no longer connect to the various muscle fibers being checked with the EMG needle. If instead the nerve is just "irritated" by a bulging disc or bony facet spur than the nerve will still be healthy enough to maintain the connection to the muscle and the EMG result will be normal. ...Read more

Experiencing pain and tingling in left leg/foot. MRI shows herniated disc L4 L5 with L5 nerve impingement but EMG was normal. Get a 2nd EMG?

Physical therapy: In a case where there are symptoms of nerve impingement, and some tests show it (MRI) and others don't (EMG), this may reflect the positional and postural nature of the way our spinal cord and nerve roots move in our body. Rather than get more testing, consider physical therapy. If several weeks of PT had no benefit, then follow-up in person with a neurologist, physiatrist, or neurosurgeon. ...Read more

I have throbbing pain in left leg to the top of foot. Could this be sciatic nerve problem? I am 78 years of age.

Throbbing pain foot: Certainly not the classic way sciatica presents or's diagnosed but with the right REST of the history together with other symptoms & how problem's evolved- sciatica MAY be on the short list of possibilities. Point is you need a good examination to rule out other things such as vascular, infectious, & other problems. More questions? Write me at: www.healthtap.com/dr-saghafi ...Read more

Have a l5 s1 disc herniation recently while running and driving i experience excruciating pain in left leg and anterior half of foot like it goes numb?

Have a l5 s1 disc herniation recently while running and driving i experience excruciating pain in left leg and anterior half of foot like it goes numb?

Comments: Do feel that many of these disc herniations can desiccate and shrink over period of 9-10 months, but clearly, if things get worse, and disc herniates further, could get to a surgical intervention. Physical therapy with potential McKenzie exercises, may be best approach. Do NOT do this on your own. ...Read more
