Sudden, severe sharp pain, spasms in my entire right arm. Pain began in neck, then traveled down shoulder, down to wrist. Arm pulsates with pain. Help?
Sounds like: Nerve irritation or injury that could be coming from your neck seem a very likely explanation for these symptoms. Assessing if neck position change the symptoms might help. A good neurological history and competent examination should sort this out. Arms are innervated: by spinal cord roots C3-T2. Sudden pain is worrisome, but wrist & hand weakness is even more concerning. Pain: lots of possibilities. If Short of breath or bad chest pain should be seen now to insure not cardiac in origin or lung related. I only mention heart as you have left arm pain too, but hurts more with movement, so unlikely. Get evaluated.: I always think about "what's the worst this could be?" and with chest pain and left arm pain, i would like to see you have your heart evaluated pronto. But the fact that neck movement brings on left arm pain makes me wonder if you may have a problem in the cervical discs in your neck. Need exam: Your symptoms suggest cubital tunnel syndrome ( ulnar nerve entrapment @ elbow) but a thorough history and physical exam is required to confirm. Supraspinatus( rotator cuff) injuries can occasionally present as you describe but this would be unusual. Two considerations: You might possess pinching of nerve in neck, cervical radiculopathy, and if arm is raised, you might feel less symptoms. Or, you could have thoracic outlet syndrome, and if arm is elevated, you will have more intense symptoms. One additional caveat, make sure that your pain is not of cardiac origin.
