Arthritis synovitis: Can give a slight bit of swelling in the joint such that fluid when it's moved around takes up space and you interpret that as discomfort or stiffness. Even very early arthritis where the X-ray might seem normal can have this Synovitis can be swelling alone. Most common is OA. Pain in interphalangeal joint of big toe a few weeks but playing soccer last night the pain has increased significantly. Hurts to walk on it. Help?
Soccer and see a podiatrist for x-rays. It is possible it is something like a capsulitis or synovitis of the capsule that envelopes the toe joint. (think sprain). A fracture should also be ruled out. Inflammation of the extensor hallucis longus tendon is another concern.
You need to stop playing until this is healed.
The toe should likely be wrapped until you can see the doctor to prevent motion. ...Read more

Help doctors! What're volar plate and dorsal plate with reference to metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal joints please?
Blue Plate Special.: The volar plate or palmar plate is more commonly used to describe structures located in the hand. However, volar plate, or more commonly called the plantar plate, can be used to describe the fibrocartilagenous structures of the metatarsal phalangeal and interphalangeal joints located in the feet as well. I am not familiar with the term dorsal plate other than distal radius fixation in the wrist. ...Read more
Can't figure out these symptoms Non-exertional chest pain, cold hands, unilateral swollen interphalangeal thumb joint w/o trauma, dyspnea on awakening?
Think rheumatic dz: Definitely confusing! Nontraumatic IP joint swelling, especially in the thumb, brings to mind rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A common complication of RA is costochondritis which affects the rib joints (chest pain) & a variant called Caplan's Syndrome leads to lung nodules. Other autoimmune diseases may mimic RA (lupus?) but testing by a Rheumatologist may sort things out for u. Good Luck! Thanx 4 ur Q ...Read more
NOT LONG: If you had a traumatic event swelling, can occur for days or longer and most likely should be evaluated by an xray to rule out a fracture. If there was no trauma, that is more concerning for a type of athritis and should be examined and appropriate labs and xrays should be obtained. ...Read more
Joint pain: Although there are some chronic arthritic problems that may affect someone your age, the first thing I would think about is whether you are doing something repetitive with those fingers that is causing a chronic irritation. Over the counter anti-inflammatory medications or Tylenol (acetaminophen) can be used for this. If the pain persists for more than 2-3 weeks, develop swelling and redness, see your doctor. ...Read more

Arthritis distal jts: Arthritis can casue this pain While early on there are no. Bumps on the distal joints near the nails that are called hebreden's nodes and the ones near the pip or middle joints, bouchard's nodes., stiffness and some swelling that makes the joints feel sore and tight at times can be an early sign. Dyshidrosis always seems to occur on same spot, same finger in winter. I don't wear rings. Middle finger, distal joint. Skin cracks. Why same spot?
Same spot: There may be no known reason why the dyshidrosis also occurs on the same spot. That may be your domaninant hand and you may tend to do certain things with that finger. Washing your hands alot and not wearing gloves in the winter makes it worse. You should see a dermatologist for a cortisone cream. It is a treatment, but not a cure. Always use a mild soap when washing. ...Read more
