See below: You describe pleurisy or pericarditis. Sometimes intercostal muscular pain can mimic this. If the pain is worse lying down, improved sitting up/forward, it suggest pericarditis. If you have fever/cough, shortness of breath, it suggests pneumonia with pleural involvement. Were your chest xray and ct done recently/for this illness? Pleurisy: You have classic pleurisy symptoms. This is an infection which can be due to virus, bacteria or mycoplasma. If you've been coughing a lot, you could have a muscular component as well now. If your chest x-ray is clear, you will get better gradually. Take Ibuprofen or Naproxen and be patient. Chest pain could be from strained muscles in the chest wall from severe coughing. Less likely possibilities include pneumonia or an air leak from the lungs called pneumothorax or pneumomediastinum.
