See MD: Sounds like a Bakers' or politeal cyst most commonly seen secondary to arthritis w/ a degenerative meniscal (cartilage) tear. Fluid from your knee joint leaks out thru the tear in the cartilage (and knee capsule) and collects and forms the cyst. Very common; however see your primary care physician to rule out other potential problems (DVT, etc.)best of luck!

Baker's Cyst: Pain behind the knee with fullness and pain suggest a possible baker's cyst. A baker's cyst is a natural outpouching of the knee joint that can get full of knee joint fluid and can make it difficult to move the knee. This should however be evaluated by an orthopedic specialist for a proper diagnosis.See 1 more doctor answer
Baker's cyst: By far the most common cause for pain in this location is a benign baker's cyst. These sit between the hamstring muscle/ tendon group and the calf (gastrocsoleus) muscles. Most common cause iskneearthritis w/ a degenerative meniscus (cartilage) tear. The tear can cause a rent in the knee joint capsule and allow joint fluid to escape into the back of the knee and form the cyst.

See an orthopedist: Sounds like you have a meniscal tear or cartilage injury. Some of your symptoms are typical - including pain and locking. Other symptoms may include swelling, clicking, and instability. Check in with a local orthopedic surgeon for an evaluation. He will probably recommend physical therapy initially and perhaps an MRI depending on you examination. Arhtroscopic surgery may be necessary.
What would cause progressively worse knee pain that stems from behind the knee? It is painful to bend and to walk?
Baker's cyst?: Several causes of pain behind the knee. I assume no recent trauma--you may have a baker's cyst--basically a collection of joint fluid extruded outside of the joint and formed sack there behind the knee...As it enlarges, it can cause pain and reduces ability to bend the knee. A bit clot in the back can do so as well, but you don't have other symptoms to suggest that. Consult your doc. Good luck.See 2 more doctor answers
