Fluid from your knee joint leaks out thru the tear in the cartilage (and knee capsule) and collects and forms the cyst. Baker's cyst?: Several causes of pain behind the knee. I assume no recent trauma--you may have a baker's cyst--basically a collection of joint fluid extruded outside of the joint and formed sack there behind the knee...As it enlarges, it can cause pain and reduces ability to bend the knee.
A bit clot in the back can do so as well, but you don't have other symptoms to suggest that.

If: If you have not had an MRI I recommend you request one. It sounds like you may have a tear in one or multiple tendons, ligaments, or meniscus. If so, you will need surgery to clean the knee out so to speak and repair the damage. In the meantime you can request a steroid injection for the pain and inflammation.
