Highly Variable: My experience in my patients is that for the most part nerve blocks (whether in the lumbar or cervical spines) are not overly successful in terms of duration or amount of relief. The reason is simple. That type of pain management is purely symptomatic & never treats the cause. Probably sciatica: It is probably a sciatica, which is an irritation of a nerve in the back that causes pain to run down the leg. Yes and No: Compression of the spinal cord in the thoracic spine can cause bowel incontinence and is a medical emergency.
